Work Ability of Workers in Different Age Groups in a Public Health Institution in Brazil

Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine the associations between demographics, work, lifestyle, housework, and the work ability of workers. Methods. Employees between the ages of 20 and 69 (N = 651), employed at a Brazilian public institution, responded to a questionnaire on demographics, work, lifestyle characteristics, and work ability. Results. Work ability decreased significantly with age among the women. The younger group had higher scores on the work ability index than the older age groups, except for mental resources. The logistic regression analysis showed that higher age, lower education, and long work history at the institution were significantly associated with reduced work ability. Conclusions. The progressive aging, the low level of education, and the long duration work in the studied institution were related to a reduction in work ability, which increases the risk of work disability or early retirement.

Work Ability and Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Workers From a Public Health Institution

Objective. The study investigated the associations between diagnosed musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), work ability and demographics, work and lifestyle characteristics in a public health institution with a variety of occupations. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out in a public health institution in Brazil. The subjects(n = 168) aged 20-69 answered a questionnaire on demographics, work, lifestyle characteristics and the work ability index. Results. A univariate regression analysis was carried out with the presence of MSD as a dependent variable. Association was found in relation to the age group, type of work demand, tenure at the institution, body mass index, work in the nutrition and laundry sectors, being a maid in the previous job, auxiliary service and auxiliary maintenance occupations, work ability in relation to physical and mental demands, estimated work impairment due to diseases, sick leave in the past year, own prognosis of work ability in 2 years’ time and mental resources: enjoying daily activities, being active and alert, being full of hope for the future. Conclusion. The presence of MSD affected several aspects of work ability.

Doenças músculo-esqueléticas, trabalho-esqueléticas, trabalho e estilo de vida entre trabalhadores de estilo de uma instituição pública de saúde

In terms of sociodemographics, the analysis of the factors associated with the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorder revealed them to be female, older, and with low level of schooling. As for labor characteristics, the disease was associated with those individuals with physically demanding work, longer working hours on a second job and longer working hours at the institution itself. Work capacity evaluation among nursing aides

O envelhecimento da forca de trabalho gera a necessidade de se desenvolver estudos a fim de avaliar a capacidade para o trabalho. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a capacidade para o trabalho de auxiliares de enfermagem de uma instituicao publica de saude. Foi desenvolvido um estudo transversal sobre capacidade para o trabalho desses profissionais em relacao as caracteristicas demograficas, de trabalho e estilo de vida (n=241). Uma analise de regressao logistica univariada foi desenvolvida tendo a capacidade para o trabalho inadequada (menor que 37 pontos) como variavel dependente. Foi encontrada associacao em relacao a idade (os mais velhos), ao tempo de trabalho na instituicao (o mais antigo), o indice de massa corporea (obesidade) e o item 1 do indice de capacidade para o trabalho: capacidade de trabalho atual. Essas informacoes podem ser utilizadas para medidas preventivas e para restaurar a capacidade para o trabalho.Work force aging generates the need to develop studied with the purpose to evaluate work capacity. Musculoskeletal symptoms and work ability among agricultural machinery operators

Those subjects whose employment has physical demands present more frequently musculoskeletal symptoms than others. The agricultural sector activities include tasks with important physical demands that may have a negative impact in the workers health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms and its association with work ability in agricultural machinery operators. It is a cross-sectional study. The participants (n = 204) answered a self-administered questionnaire on demographics, work and lifestyle characteristics, Work Ability Index and the Nordic Musculoskeletal Symptoms Questionnaire. The response rate was 89.78%. The mean age of the workers was 32.3 years, and 47.1% of them reported musculoskeletal symptoms at least one body part over the past 12 months. Those subjects who presented work ability index <37 points, 87.5% reported some kind of musculoskeletal symptom. This study showed that the work ability was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) correlated to musculoskeletal symptoms presence. It is recommended that measures to promote and improve the work ability are designed and deployed based on musculoskeletal disorders prevention.

O ensino de vigilância à saúde do trabalhador no Curso de Enfermagem

Este estudo tem como objetivo descrever a experiencia de ensino de vigilância a saude do trabalhador, desenvolvida na disciplina obrigatoria de Enfermagem na Saude do Trabalhador no Curso de Graduacao em Enfermagem da Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos. Como estrategia de ensino foi desenvolvida a analise epidemiologica de todas as Comunicacoes de Acidentes de Trabalho registradas junto ao Instituto Nacional de Seguridade Social, agencia Sao Carlos, referentes ao municipio de Sao Carlos e ao ano de 2000. Foram desenvolvidos conteudos relativos a vigilância a Saude do Trabalhador e temas correlacionados. Com base no sistema de informacoes construido, foram realizadas pelos alunos atividades praticas relativas a sistematizacao das informacoes e a utilizacao do software empregado para insercao, consolidacao e analise dos dados. Sao discutidos os resultados obtidos pelos alunos com as atividades realizadas, as dificuldades apresentadas e as possibilidades de utilizacao dessas estrategias para o ensino.
