Wireless measurement system based on ZigBee transmission technology

Daniel Alexandru Visan; Ioan Lita; Mariana Jurian; Ion Bogdan Cioc

In this paper we present a new application that use ZigBee radio modules for implementation of an distributed system intended for continuous measurement and monitoring of radiation level in an surveillance area. Wireless measurement system is realized around JN5139-EK010 ZigBee development board which was programmed for this specific application. The system can be used for radiation level measurement and surveillance in the customs supervising offices, frontiers, nuclear plants, or other industrial or civil areas etc. Besides the development board, the hardware configuration of the proposed system comprises also the sensors mounted on remote modules. The development board is connected to PC through the serial interface. The remote modules periodically read the signals from sensors and send the result to the controller board that display the received data on a LCD panel. The analog signal processing from radiation sensors is realized with dynamically reconfigurable Field Programmable Analog Arrays AN221E04 from Anadigm. From the point of view of ZigBee protocol, in the proposed application the controller board is programmed to operate as Coordinator and the remote board act as End Device. If the system must be extended, some of the supplementary added ZigBee nodes will be necessary to be configured as Routers. The use of JN5139 ZigBee wireless microcontroller ensures a robust and secure communication between systems modules with very low power consumption. For obtaining a further reduction of the power consumption, the system has also the possibility to configure remote board thus to transmit data only when are interrogated by the controller board.

Multimodal biometric securing methods for informatic systems

Sorin Soviany; Mariana Jurian

The paper presents a novel approach to provide a more secured remote access to informatic systems; this approach is based on biometric identification multimodal methods with more levels of biometric fusion. The multi-level fusion is the novelty of this solution, as the actual approaches in multimodal biometric as relying on single-level fusion schemes. The integration of more fusion schemes within the same biometric system enhances performance, security and accuracy for the actual unimodal biometric systems and also for the multimodal ones, especially for on score-level fusion.

Simulation and implementation of adaptive and matched filters using FPAA technology

Daniel Alexandru Visan; Ioan Lita; Mariana Jurian; Ion Bogdan Cioc

This paper presents the results obtained in the simulation and implementation of adaptive and matched filters using the new technology of FPAA (Field Programmable Analog Arrays). The proposed filter structures are intended to be used in conditioning of signals from radiation sensors but can be also used in any application that necessitates signal extraction from noise. For the implementation of the filter were used configurable analog blocks (CABs) from Anadigm AN221E04 dynamically reconfigurable chip. The most important advantage of the proposed design is represented by the possibility to reconfigure the filter characteristics in order to meet application specific requirements.

Work in progress: E-Learning Impact on Romanian Maritime Education

Mariana Jurian; Laurentiu Chiotoroiu; Martha Buibas

The introduction of modern technologies in the education system has been a main concern of all Romanian education institutions. This paper describes the preliminary developments of a Leonardo da Vinci European project that involves creative pilot programs for junior officers on board tankers. The paper discusses also the project plan and the main steps in which distant learning are being implemented in the maritime training modules. Finally, the paper outlines the preliminary results regarding Web enabled simulation as a new tool for learning, training and assessment of students

Application of particle filter algorithms in an accurate and reliable localization and tracking of WSN's mobile devices

Dalina Zevedei; Mariana Jurian; Adrian Scutariu

This Wireless communication capabilities enable location-based applications such as management telecommunication work teams and other professional groups in field. The accuracy and reliability localization may be degraded by noise. In order to improve the localization precision is proposed a filtering algorithm that is characterized throw robustness and simplicity for estimation application. The particle filter (PF) algorithm offers a proper solution when the challenges studied are nonlinear or include non Gaussian noise. In this work are analyzed and compared two filtering algorithms: the standard particle filter and the cost reference particle filter, for tracking a mobile device. The results underline the robustness and the reliability of the cost reference particle filter to exemplify the errors which are characteristic in filtering algorithms.

Ioan Lita; Mariana Jurian; Daniel Alexandru Visan; Stefan Oprea; Ion Bogdan Cioc

The system presented in this paper represents an enhanced tester for active devices. It ensure the identification of the transistor type (PNP, NPN, JFET, n-MOS, p-MOS) connected to the test terminals, can detect the disposing of the components terminals in the package and also can measure the gain factor of the bipolar transistors. In addition, the proposed module can measure the channel resistance of field effect transistors (FET) and threshold voltage for metal-oxide transistors (MOS). The measurement results for the tested device are presented on an LCD display. The system is based on PIC16F872 microcontroller which manage the voltages applied to the three test terminals where is connected the semiconductor device. The system is battery operated. By using the microcontroller technology and very few external components, it is obtained a portable and versatile apparatus that allows quick and accurate measurements on active electronic components.

Business Intelligence For Educational Purpose

Logica Banica; Liviu Cristian Stefan; Mariana Jurian

Abstract The paper follows three main directions: business intelligence – as a software tool, companies – as an application field and top management – as target of intelligent efforts. From this symbiosis does result an advantage, scientific and data based educational tool, having the goal to give the students a tool to explore data collections and analysis methods in order to improve the management of a company and forecast its evolution. The purpose of Business Intelligence (BI) software is to help the firms on acquiring knowledge about highlights and dangerous trends, to observe the connections and to forecast the future market evolutions. From this perspective, we consider that students need to learn theory and practical application about BI. After an overview of the BI main concepts, we choose to use the facilities of Jaspersoft BI software; to model the most frequently used analysis requirements, displaying the most relevant data and key indicators, following the steps of a BI system.

Reconfigurable platform for versatile generation of communication signals

Daniel Alexandru Visan; Mariana Jurian; Ioan Lita; Ion Bogdan Cioc

Field Programmable Analogue Array (FPAA) technologies can offer an analogue platform for a vast number of applications, including communication circuits requiring adaptive processing. The subject of this paper deals with the problem of generating and processing of base-band communication signals using a reconfigurable platform based on FPAA technology. In the experiments it was used AN221E04 circuit included in Anadigmvortex - AN221K04 development board and connected to PC through a serial interface. Also it was used the software tools from AnadigmDesigner®2 that allows complex circuits to be designed with a simple drag-and-drop graphical interface. Especially analog modulators and demodulator were implemented, but the capabilities of the circuits offer great possibilities for more elaborated modulation schemes.

Modeling and simulation of an recognition system for digital modulated signals

Daniel Alexandru Visan; Mariana Jurian; Ioan Lita; Ion Bogdan Cioc

Automatic modulation type identification is needed in many applications. The recognition of the communication system for example is done by inspecting the received signal properties like modulation type, carrier frequency, baud rate and so on. In this paper we introduce a new AMR (Automatic Modulation Recognition) method based on time and spectral domain features of the received signal. A broad class of analog and digital modulations is considered. Baud rate and carrier frequency estimation is performed by existing methods. The proposed model was tested through simulations in LabVIEW software. Using a noisy input signal revealed that the signal to noise lower limit for the analogue and digital modulation classifier is approximately 10 dB.

Ioan Lita; Mariana Jurian; Daniel Alexandru Visan; Ion Bogdan Cioc

This paper presents an integrated platform for studying the digital transmission method named pulse code modulation. The platform consists in an experimental board and a software model that allows the measurements of significant parameters of a codec based on this communication method together with the animated visualization of the circuits operation and typical waveforms. The modeling and simulations were realized in Proteus software environment. The proposed platform represents a very useful tool in didactical process of teaching pulse code modulation principles in communication laboratories.
