This cross-sectional study examines a counseling program on healthy lifestyles run by health care professionals to establish the adoption of healthy dietary practices by patients attending a primary health care unit. Participants in the study included 417 clients of the unit, the majority of whom were women (78.9%), with an average age of 39 years, a high incidence of excessive weight, (59.1%), important dietary inadequacies, and with a contrastingly low frequency of receiving counseling (40.8%). Clients receiving counseling displayed more appropriate consumption of candy/gum (p=0.031), softdrinks (p=0.036), salty foods (p=0.037), artificial flavorings (p=0.005) and eggs (p=0.010). Adoption of healthy dietary practices was more common among older individuals and women (p <0.05). Despite the importance of nutritional counseling in dealing with such health problems, this was not prevalent, suggesting the need for greater intervention by health care professionals aimed at preventing and controlling disease and promoting good health.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of factors associated with adherence to healthy ways of life. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study carried out with users aged over19 from a primary health care unit in Belo Horizonte, MG, Southeastern Brazil, from 2009 to 2010. The sample was selected to estimate the proportion of people who adhere to healthy ways of life (healthy eating and physical activity) through counseling conducted by health care professionals, and associated socio-demographic, dietary and health factors. Additionally, the perceived benefits from the adherence to healthy ways of life and their possible barriers were verified. Descriptive analysis, univariate (Chi-square Test or Fishers Exact) and multivariate by Poisson Regression were performed. RESULTS: Of the 417 users selected for the survey, only 40.8% received counseling, of which 50.9% demonstrated adherence. In multivariate Poisson regression, adherence was associated with the perception of food being healthy (PR = 1.67, 95%CI 1.15;2.43) and participation in the public service health campaigns(PR = 1.55, 95%CI 1.18;2.03). The main reported benefits of adherence were greater willingness and weight loss and, the most commonly reported barriers were difficulty of changing habits and lack of time. CONCLUSIONS: Adopting healthier lifestyles requires the proposing of strategies that promote adherence, as well as the participation of professionals in implementing counseling as a health promoting action that generates greater autonomy and quality of life among those involved, supported by policies and programs promoting health.OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of factors associated with adherence to healthy ways of life.

This study aimed to estimate energy expenditure due to physical activity and to determine the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and the factors associated with this condition in adult (≥ 20 years of age) users of a Basic Health Unit (BHU). This cross-sectional study included 415 users of a BHU in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, located in the coverage area of the Academia da Cidade (City Gym) program, a health promotion service of primary healthcare. Physical activity was evaluated using the IPAQ-short version questionnaire, which showed a prevalence of sedentary lifestyles (<450 MET-min/week) of 31.2% and a median energy expenditure of 831.0 MET-min/week (591.0 among men and 865.5 among women). The results of a multivariate analysis, based on Poisson regression, showed that sedentary lifestyles were positively associated with age and negatively associated with prior knowledge of the Academia da Cidade in the region. It is important to note that the present study’s results may favor the planning of actions geared toward promoting more appropriate healthy lifestyles, as well as toward providing subsidies to improve the impact of health promotion programs, such as the Academia da Cidade program, which has recently been implemented throughout Brazil. This study aimed to estimate energy expenditure due to physical activity and to determine the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and the factors associated with this condition in adult (≥ 20 years of age) users of a Basic Health Unit (BHU). Introduction: Counseling is process guidance of health professionals that enables the construction of healthy lifestyles and health promotion. Aim: To check the performance of primary healthcare professionals on counseling healthy ways of living, according to the perception of users, and the factors associated with this practice. Method: A sectional study was conducted with users of the Basic Health Unit of Belo Horizonte, MG. Food consumption was assessed with the use of a food-frequency questionnaire. Sociodemographic data, morbidity, medication use, physical activity, and anthropometric measurements were collected, as were reported receipt of counseling about healthy ways of living (healthy eating and physical activity).
