Costs and cost-effectiveness analysis of treatment in children with eczema by nurse practitioner vs. dermatologist : results of a randomized, controlled trial and a review of international costs

Marie L. Schuttelaar; Karin M. Vermeulen; Pieter Jan Coenraads

Background  In a randomized, controlled trial (RCT) on childhood eczema we reported that substituting nurse practitioners (NPs) for dermatologists resulted in similar outcomes of eczema severity and in the quality of life, and higher patient satisfaction.

Work‐related skin diseases (WSD) are caused or worsened by a professional activity. Occupational skin diseases (OSD) need to fulfil additional legal criteria which differ from country to country. OSD range amongst the five most frequently notified occupational diseases (musculoskeletal diseases, neurologic diseases, lung diseases, diseases of the sensory organs, skin diseases) in Europe.

Contact allergy is a common condition and can severely interfere with daily life or professional activities. Due to changes in exposures, such as introduction of new substances, new products or formulations and regulatory intervention, the spectrum of contact sensitization changes.

A proposal to create an extension to the European baseline series

Mark Wilkinson; Rosella Gallo; An Goossens; Jeanne Duus Johansen; Thomas Rustemeyer; Javier Sánchez-Pérez; Marie L. Schuttelaar; Wolfgang Uter

The current European baseline series consists of 30 allergens, and was last updated in 2015.

Extended documentation for hand dermatitis patients : Pilot study on irritant exposures

Wolfgang Uter; Andrea Bauer; Lynda Bensefa-Colas; Richard Brans; Marie-Noëlle Crépy; Ana Giménez-Arnau; Francesca Larese Filon; Suzana Ljubojevic Hadzavdic; Maria Pesonen; Marie L. Schuttelaar; Mark Wilkinson; Carola Lidén

Irritant exposure may be a contributory cause or the sole cause of (occupational) hand dermatitis. However, the documentation of irritant exposures in clinical practice is not standardized.

Prevalence of skin disease in a population-based sample of adults from five European countries

Åke Svensson; Robert Ofenloch; Magnus Bruze; Luigi Naldi; Simone Cazzaniga; Peter Elsner; Margarida Gonçalo; Marie L. Schuttelaar; Thomas L. Diepgen

There is a lack of prevalence data on skin diseases in the general adult population; most studies have been carried out in small, national or consecutive clinical samples.

Is there an increased risk of cervical neoplasia in atopic dermatitis patients treated with oral immunosuppressive drugs

Floor M. Garritsen; R.H.M. Verheijen; C.G. Gerestein; A.D. van Zuilen; Jart A. F. Oosterhaven; M. van Dijk; Carla A.F.M. Bruijnzeel-Koomen; Marie L. Schuttelaar; M. S. De Bruin-Weller

Oral immunosuppressive drugs are frequently prescribed in young women with atopic dermatitis (AD). Immunocompromised patients may have a higher risk of developing high‐risk HPV infections, cervical intra‐epithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical carcinoma. Most literature on patients using oral immunosuppressive drugs is available in organ transplant patients. Literature on the risk of developing cervical carcinoma in AD patients treated with oral immunosuppressive drugs is lacking. At this moment, there is no clear guideline/consensus on this topic, but in daily practice, questions arise concerning whether this risk is increased and whether more intensive screening in women using immunosuppressive drugs should take place.

European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA): polysensitization, 2009-2014: ESSCA polysensitization 2009-2014

Daan Dittmar; Wolfgang Uter; Andrea Bauer; Ana B. Fortina; Andreas J. Bircher; Magdalena Czarnecka-Operacz; Aleksandra Dugonik; Peter Elsner; Rosella Gallo; Sharizan A. Ghaffar; Anna Giménez-Arnau; Graham A. Schuttelaar

Polysensitization, defined as being allergic to three or more haptens from the European baseline series, is considered to reflect increased susceptibility to developing a contact allergy, and is likely to be associated with an impaired quality of life.

Contact dermatitis caused by a new rubber compound detected in canvas shoes

Eva Hulstaert; Ola Bergendorff; Christina Persson; An Goossens; Liesbeth Gilissen; Malin Engfeldt; Magnus Bruze; Marie L. Schuttelaar; Joost M. Meijer; Hilde Lapeere

In 2015 and 2016, female patients in Flanders consulted a dermatologist because they developed skin lesions after wearing a specific brand of canvas shoes.

Pilot study on a new concept of documenting the clinical relevance of patch test results in contact dermatitis patients

Wolfgang Uter; Andrea Bauer; Lynda Bensefa-Colas; Richard Brans; Marie-Noëlle Crépy; Ana Giménez-Arnau; Francesca Larese Filon; Suzana Ljubojević Hadžavdić; Maria Pesonen; Marie L. Schuttelaar; Mark Wilkinson

Assessment of the clinical relevance of patch test reactions is an essential part of the diagnostic work‐up of patients with (occupational) contact dermatitis. However, final diagnostic information, particularly the clinical relevance of allergic patch test reactions, has hitherto been ill‐represented in clinical documentation systems (patch test software) and surveillance registries based on these.
