Modeling shared information spaces (SIS)

Marit Kjøsnes Natvig; Oddrun Pauline Ohren

Many companies experience that their corporate intranet is getting complex and poorly manageable. We believe that developing a model for the website, or shared information space will make the management easier and provide solutions that support collaboration and knowledge sharing within the enterprise. The present paper proposes a meta model defining the conceptual building blocks of an information space. The meta model takes knowledge as well as information sharing into account by letting ontologies represent problem domains important to the enterprise, and be used as means of imposing structure on available information. To support the different needs of the employees the ability to interact with the information space through different perspectives is essential. An example of how the meta model can be deployed to support contextual retrieval of information in a workflow management application is described.

Empirical Evaluation of the Quality of Conceptual Models Based on User Perceptions: A Case Study in the Transport Domain

Daniela S. Cruzes; Audun Vennesland; Marit Kjøsnes Natvig

Today, many companies design and maintain a vast amount of conceptual models. It has been also observed that such large model collections exhibit serious quality issues in industry practice. A number of quality frameworks have been proposed in the literature, but the practice is that practitioners continue to evaluate conceptual models in an ad-hoc and subjective way, based on common sense and experience. Therefore, there is a lack of empirical works in the evaluation of conceptual frameworks. This paper reports an empirical qualitative study on the evaluation of the quality of a conceptual framework in the domain of transport logistics, using existent quality evaluation frameworks. The results show how the users perceive the ease of understanding, the usefulness, the perceived semantic quality and satisfaction with the models included in the conceptual framework. The results also provided their view on advantages, challenges and improvements to be performed in the framework.

Towards Transparent Real-Time Privacy Risk Assessment of Intelligent Transport Systems

Gencer Erdogan; Aida Omerovic; Marit Kjøsnes Natvig; Isabelle Tardy

There are many privacy concerns within Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). On the one hand, end-users are concerned about their privacy risk exposure, while on the other hand, ITS providers need to claim privacy awareness and document compliance with regulations or otherwise face devastating fines. One approach to address these concerns is to use methods specifically developed to assess privacy risks of ITS. The literature lacks such methods, and the complex and dynamic nature of ITS introduces challenges that need to be properly addressed when assessing privacy risks. The main challenges are related to real-time assessment of privacy risks to (1) inform end-users about exposed privacy risks, and (2) help providers asses privacy-compliance risks. We propose a method to privacy risk assessment addressing these challenges. The method is exemplified on an ITS-example. The initial results indicate feasibility of the method and propose directions for future work.

Collaboration Support for Transport in the Retail Supply Chain

Marit Kjøsnes Natvig; Leendert W. M. Wienhofen

The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we describe a user-centered design process for finding functional requirements for holistic control panels supporting better collaboration and coordination between transport operations and supply chain processes affected by or affecting the transport of goods. Secondly, we present the resulting functionality as seen from the perspective of different actors in the supply chain, from producer to shop. One of the largest retailers in Norway is used as a case.
