to provide Protestant church services and pastoral care in the parishes, without having the support of the system, though there was no problem where the incumbent (usually the vicar) was willing to work in the new Church. Very soon the Thirds tax was imposed, compelling beneficeholders not supporting the new Church to surrender one third of the revenues, to be divided between the crown and the Reformed Church. This was carried out with varying degrees of success over the country
