Abstract : Rural space is the convergence point of two material bases that define life in society: the imperatives of nature and the socioeconomic system of rural work. These forces overlap in a dialectical movement, captured by Silva Freire’s poetry in the context of Cerrado in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. From the ecocritical perspective of Social Ecology, this article aims to understand the interaction between nature and culture in Freire’s poems, in which Cerrado and the country men transform each other by means of workingthe land. In this way, the poems “Cerrado/raizes”, “Carvoeiro/vegetal” and “Canavial”, from the book Aguas de visitacao (FREIRE, 2002), are analyzed, focusing on the processes through which nature and men are reduced to feedstock and labor force to be exploited. Keywords : Cerrado; rural work; Social Ecology.
