Trends in ICT and Multimedia Supported Education The formal educational system is facing different problems regarding adaptation towards the needs of a modern knowledge society. In the article, two important and comprehensive challenges to todays formal educational system are discussed and commented upon. The first problem is the incoherence between the needs of the labor market and formal education system outcomes in terms of graduated students. Another problem is the distancing between the prevailing traditional pedagogical methods within formal educational institutions and the ways in which students acquire information and knowledge outside of the schools as they are becoming less and less interested in traditional lectures. It is argued that specific information and communication system technologies (ICT) supported mechanisms, such as social learning and virtual communities may address these challenges. Theories of communities and social learning that may be useful for implementation in the education system are explained and practical implementation is proposed.

Abstract New organization scheme according to Bologna study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana has resulted in modification of lectures also at the Department of Automatic Control. In the paper organization of education process is presented for the subject entitled “Advanced control design methods” at the level of master study. For motivation purposes the subsequent main goals were followed: transparent connections between theory and practice, flexibility in studying possibilities, excellent final results in knowledge presentation and introduction into research activities. To fulfil desired aims laboratory exercises and exams are combined into students’ projects which can be realized using personal computers, laboratory pilot plants and corresponding equipment and partly also through e-learning platform E-CHO enabling among other functionality also virtual and remote experimentations. The final students’ work evaluation includes also corresponding oral presentations where the results have to be defended. This paper aims to obtain adaptive controllers capable of interacting and controlling a physical system in real time. This task is accomplished using a model with a DC motor platform in order to carry out test and to obtain experimental results. It could then be possible to extend these controllers to other systems with minor changes. To achieve this purpose, MATLAB and Simulink simulation environment are used, creating the models needed through block languages.

Regarding technical development different configurations and organizations of e-learning are becoming more and more popular. In spite of the fact that it is frequently used at different educational levels there is always a challenge how to combine in a suitable manner remote learning with the classical one to take advantage of both possibilities. In the paper a strategy is described which was tested through the environment of E-CHO platform in one - semester course regarding Multivariable systems control design at the Faculty of electrical engineering in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

In the paper some ideas of studying multivariable control are presented where special attention is devoted to step - by step transition to e-learning. Introduced ideas are realized through design projects between which one is chosen as a competition game and is realized using E-CHO system, Matlab and a pilot plant. All preparation for the game can be realized using remote virtual and actual laboratory device while the competition itself is taking place in the laboratory to preserve personal contacts between the students and the staff. This paper presents a work in progress done within an Interreg Europe project called ERUDITE. The aim of the project is to create a process that enables regional stakeholders across Europe to co-identify and co-design appropriate and innovative digital services on the top of high speed broadband, based on existing needs and a recognition of the social, economic and environmental value that they have the potential to generate to society as a whole.

In the paper E-CHO e-learning environment and its main characteristics are presented and analysed. This program was developed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, where cooperation between different laboratories enables integration of characteristics important for education purposes and specific for different research areas. Some of them are illustrated through a modelling and simulation examples which enable also several further extensions. These examples are divided into the sequence of steps or sequences guiding students through important dynamic system properties, modelling and simulation, and evaluation of obtained results with respect to experimentation measurements. Built-in flexibility enables also the usage of virtual and real remote experimentation as well as different repetition and testing possibilities.

Important features of the K nowledge Management Systems, based on the In formation and Communication Technologies (ICT) ar e described in the fir st section. These f eatures emphasiz e the import ance of W eb 2.0 concepts whic h f oster user generated con tent dev elopment as well a s ef fective cont ent filt ering a nd selection capabilities (e. g. R eally Simpl e S yndication – R SS f eeds). The mos t pop ular commun ity port als (blog ging, vide o, etc.) now adays g enerate mor e con tent than ev er bef ore. This new par adigm, wher e user s become activ e participants instead of passive observers, calls for improvements in quality assessment and demands the adaptation of user generated content, so that it could be used f or the wider interested audience. On the other hand, corpor ate or academic environments do not benefit fr om the community orien ted W eb 2.0 adv antages dir ectly. K nowledge Management challeng es in th ese environments lie in the meaningful and tight integration of the Learning Manag ement Systems (LMS) into the existing knowledge resources and information systems. This enables cr eation of personalized learn ing en vironments f or t arget user s, which is described in the second section. Sub sequently, some of the c ase s tudies, which ar e in corporated in to the E -CHO Learning Mana gement S ystem at the F aculty of Electric al Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slov enia, are presented. Conclusions of the paper d escribe future research and development w ork, based on our e xperiences and new learning paradigm, putting learners into the c entre of the educational process.

The paper presents an innovative mobile learning platform QFK (Quest For Knowledge) which follows the game-based learning paradigm. QFK allows for creation of educational games using multimedia content and playing of the games inside and outside classrooms. Students access educational games using PCs and/or mobile phones in order to complete missions and tasks. Teachers can supervise the game flow in real time, communicate with students and upload additional content during game play. The concept of the game was developed within EU funded eMAPPS project.
