Bryophyte Red List of Serbia and Montenegro

The bryophyte Red List of Serbia and Montenegro comprises 254 species (212 mosses and 42 liverworts). Serbia and Montenegro have 39.50% of threatened bryoflora. One moss species is considered as extinct (Encalypta serbica Katic). In the threatened categories there are 20 critically endangered (CR), 35 endangered (EN) and 100 vulnerable (VU) bryophyte species. Seventy-two species are considered to be of low risk, and 36 are too data deficient to place them in any category, but potentially with further investigation will enter one of the threat categories in the Red List.

folium and S. recurvum have similar ranges and ecology. In S. angustifolium the stem leaves are more triangular and rarely erose while the branch leaves are narrower and more strongly 5-ranked (McQueen & Andrus, 2006). Sphagnum recurvum also has narrower and more distinctly 5-ranked branch leaves than S. flexuosum, as well as a much more strongly differentiated stem cortex. In S. flexuosum the branch leaves are only slightly recurved when dry whereas in S. recurvum they are sharply recurved (McQueen & Andrus, 2006). Until now, none of these species of the European S. recurvum complex has been identified in the Azores.

New national and regional bryophyte records, 32

Ditrichum gracile was recorded in the locality Samarske stijene in the Velika Kapela Mt for first time in Croatia. Ditrichum gracile occured within forests of common spruce belonging to the community Hyperico grisebachii - Piceetum on the forest floor, forming distinct patches of several square decimetres. The plants were of typical appearance, medium to robust, in reddish green to purplish black, rarely green patches.

Bryology and bryophyte protection in south-eastern Europe

This paper reports on the state of knowledge of bryophytes in south-eastern European countries and the level of protection of bryophytes there. The study also suggests actions to be taken in order to reach an acceptable level of bryophyte conservation in this region. The difficulties and peculiarities involved in protection of bryophytes in south-eastern Europe are also discussed, in general and by country. The aim of this study is to encourage bryological investigations in SE Europe and to revive interest in bryophytes and bryophyte protection in this region.
