Direct laser writing and characterization of Slanted Pore Photonic Crystals

Markus Deubel; Martin Wegener; Artan Kaso; Sajeev John

We report the fabrication and characterization of the recently proposed Slanted Pore Photonic Crystals. The Photonic Crystals fabricated via direct laser writing by multiphoton polymerization are characterized by electron microscopy as well as by optical spectroscopy. The latter is compared with band structure calculations. We show that this Slanted Pore geometry allows for controlling the surface termination of the Photonic Crystal.

3D-2D-3D photonic crystal heterostructures fabricated by direct laser writing

Markus Deubel; Martin Wegener; Stefan Linden; G. von Freymann; Sajeev John

Using direct laser writing, we fabricate photoresist templates for 3D-2D-3D photonic crystal heterostructures for what we believe to be the first time. The optical properties of these structures are directly compared with the theoretical ideal, revealing good agreement and hence good sample quality. This provides an experimental starting point for the microfabrication and testing of broadband, 3D air-waveguide microcircuitry in photonic bandgap materials.

Using direct laser writing, we fabricate photoresist templates for 3D-2D-3D photonic crystal heterostructures. The optical properties of these structures are directly compared with scattering-matrix calculations, revealing good agreement, hence good sample quality.

We present our work on the fabrication of three-dimensional Photonic Crystal templates by holographic lithography and direct laser writing. Both optical methods are highly qualified for the production of top-quality polymeric three-dimensional Photonic Crystals and allow in combination the controlled incorporation of defects and waveguides in large-area structures. Scanning electron micrographs and optical spectra of different Photonic Crystals are presented and compared with numerical simulations. Our roadmap to infiltrate the polymeric templates with high refractive-index materials is outlined.

M. Hermatschweiler; Markus Deubel; Martin Wegener; F. Pérez-Willard; Nicolas Tétreault; G. A. Ozin; G. von Freymann

We present recent progress in converting polymer templates into three-dimensional silicon photonic crystals by using a silicon-double-inversion procedure. This has led to woodpiles with both improved structural and optical quality.

Three-Dimensional Silicon Photonic Crystals from Polymer Templates: Single versus Double Inversion

M. Hermatschweiler; Markus Deubel; Martin Wegener; F. Pérez-Willard; Nicolas Tétreault; Geoffrey A. Ozin; Georg von Freymann

We present recent progress in converting polymer templates into three-dimensional silicon photonic crystals by using double (single) inversion. This has led to woodpiles (inverse woodpiles) with improved structural and optical quality.

Analysis of transmission and reflection spectra of three-dimensional photonic crystals

Stefan Linden; Markus Deubel; Martin Wegener

We use numerical simulations based on a scattering-matrix formalism to investigate the influence of diffracted orders on transmission and reflection spectra of photonic crystal samples.

We review our work on fabricating templates for photonic band gap materials at telecommunication wavelengths via holography and direct laser writing. Measured optical spectra are compared with theory, revealing the excellent quality of these structures.

G. von Freymann; Nicolas Tétreault; G. A. Ozin; Sajeev John; F. Pérez-Willard; Markus Deubel; Martin Wegener

We present the successful silicon double inversion of direct laser written polymer templates for three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals. Combined with plasma pre-treatment it allows for the fabrication of 3D photonic bandgap materials for telecommunication wavelengths.
