A holistic account of the own-race effect in face recognition: evidence from a cross-cultural study

A robust finding in the cross-cultural research is that peoples memories for faces of their own race are superior to their memories for other-race faces. However, the mechanisms underlying the own-race effect have not been well defined. In this study, a holistic explanation was examined in which Caucasian and Asian participants were asked to recognize features of Caucasian and Asian faces presented in isolation and in the whole face. The main finding was that Caucasian participants recognized own-race faces more holistically than Asian faces whereas Asian participants demonstrated holistic recognition for both own-race and other-race faces. The differences in holistic recognition between Caucasian and Asian participants mirrored differences in their relative experience with own-race and other-race faces. These results suggest that the own-race effect may arise from the holistic recognition of faces from a highly familiar racial group.

Conceptual representations in mind and brain: Theoretical developments, current evidence and future directions

Conceptual representations in long-term memory crucially contribute to perception and action, language and thought. However, the precise nature of these conceptual memory traces is discussed controversially. In particular, the grounding of concepts in the sensory and motor brain systems is the focus of a current debate. Here, we review theoretical accounts of the structure and neural basis of conceptual memory and evaluate them in light of recent empirical evidence. Models of conceptual processing can be distinguished along four dimensions: (i) amodal versus modality-specific, (ii) localist versus distributed, (iii) innate versus experience-dependent, and (iv) stable versus flexible. A systematic review of behavioral and neuroimaging studies in healthy participants along with brain-damaged patients will then be used to evaluate the competing theoretical approaches to conceptual representations. These findings indicate that concepts are flexible, distributed representations comprised of modality-specific conceptual features. Conceptual features are stored in distinct sensory and motor brain areas depending on specific sensory and motor experiences during concept acquisition. Three important controversial issues are highlighted, which require further clarification in future research: the existence of an amodal conceptual representation in the anterior temporal lobe, the causal role of sensory and motor activation for conceptual processing and the grounding of abstract concepts in perception and action. We argue that an embodiment view of conceptual representations realized as distributed sensory and motor cell assemblies that are complemented by supramodal integration brain circuits may serve as a theoretical framework to guide future research on concrete and abstract concepts.

The N400 is modulated by unconsciously perceived masked words: further evidence for an automatic spreading activation account of N400 priming effects

It is a matter of debate whether the N400 component of the event-related brain potential (ERP) is sensitive to unconscious automatic priming mechanisms or to strategic mechanisms only. Recent studies demonstrated N400 modulation by masked primes at a short SOA supporting an automatic spreading activation account. However, it cannot be ruled out that strategic mechanisms based upon partial prime identification contributed to the observed priming effects. The present study was set up to substantiate masked N400 priming effects as an index of automatic spreading activation. It was assessed whether partial identification of the masked words due to backward priming could have supported strategic priming to occur. In experiment 1, ERPs were recorded while subjects performed lexical decisions on targets preceded by masked and unmasked primes at an SOA of 67 ms. Masked words, which were not consciously perceived, as well as visible words were shown to modulate the N400 to meaningfully related target words. Experiment 2 required subjects to perform decisions on visual, lexical and semantic features of masked words presented with or without semantically related context words. Subjects performed at chance in all tasks. Furthermore, the results exclude the possibility that backward priming has rendered the masked words partially visible. The present study therefore demonstrates that N400 priming effects can be reliably obtained from unconsciously perceived masked words at a very short SOA and strengthens the notion that the N400 is modulated by automatic spreading activation and not exclusively by strategic semantic processes.

The time course of brain activations during response inhibition : evidence from event-related potentials in a go/no go task

THE cortical organization of executive control was investigated using event-related potentials (ERPs). ERPs were collected while subjects performed a go/no go task that required response inhibition. First, around 26ms after stimulus onset, an effect of response inhibition on ERPs was observed over inferior prefrontal areas. Generators in these regions were confirmed by source analysis. Later, between 300–60 ms after stimulus onset, a left lateralized fronto-central ERP effect was found which differed in topography from a non-specific effect of task difficulty. Source analysis indicated that generators in anterior cingulate and left premotor areas also contributed to this effect. Orchestrated activation of prefrontal areas and the anterior cingulate subserves executive function whereas relatively late activity of the left premotor cortex is involved in motor control.

Emotional context modulates subsequent memory effect

Emotions have been shown to modulate memory processes. However, the neuronal substrate underlying these modulatory effects is largely unknown. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated whether the context of emotional encoding modulates brain activation predictive for subsequent recall of emotionally neutral material. While inferior frontal activation predicted recall in general, our data show that in a positive encoding context, recall was predicted by activation of right anterior parahippocampal and extrastriate visual brain areas, whereas in a negative encoding context, recall was predicted by activation of the amygdala. Thus, we could demonstrate that successful episodic encoding is differentially modulated by emotional context. These results contribute to the understanding of the interaction of emotion and cognition and moreover are of general relevance for studies of episodic memory.

Time course of conscious and unconscious semantic brain activation

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate the neurophysiological correlates of conscious and unconscious semantic processing. Masked words, which do not enter consciousness, as well as visible words, were shown to modulate the N400 ERP potential to subsequently presented, meaningfully related target words. The N400 is known as an electrophysiological index of semantic processing. However, for unconsciously perceived words semantic brain activation decays fast within 200 ms, but increases with time for consciously perceived words. Thus, conscious and unconscious semantic activation involves similar brain areas, but both forms of processes exhibit distinct, qualitatively different time courses.

Perceptual and semantic sources of category-specific effects : Event-related potentials during picture and word categorization

In two experiments the effect of object category on event-related potentials (ERPs) was assessed while subjects performed superordinate categorizations with pictures and words referring to objects from natural (e.g., animal) and artifactual (e.g., tool) categories. First, a category probe was shown that was presented as name in Experiment 1 and as picture in Experiment 2. Thereafter, the target stimulus was displayed. In both experiments, analyses of the ERPs to the targets revealed effects of category at about 160 msec after target onset in the pictorial modality, which can be attributed to categoryspecific differences in perceptual processing. Later, between about 300-500 msec, natural and artifactual categories elicited similar ERP effects across target and category modalities. These findings suggest that perceptual as well as semantic sources contribute to category-specific effects. They support the view that semantic knowledge associated with different categories is represented in multiple subsystems that are similarly accessed by pictures and words.

The Sound of Concepts: Four Markers for a Link between Auditory and Conceptual Brain Systems

Traditionally, concepts are conceived as abstract mental entities distinct from perceptual or motor brain systems. However, recent results let assume modality-specific representations of concepts. The ultimate test for grounding concepts in perception requires the fulfillment of the following four markers: conceptual processing during (1) an implicit task should activate (2) a perceptual region (3) rapidly and (4) selectively. Here, we show using functional magnetic resonance imaging and recordings of event-related potentials, that acoustic conceptual features recruit auditory brain areas even when implicitly presented through visual words. Fulfilling the four markers, the findings of our study unequivocally link the auditory and conceptual brain systems: recognition of words denoting objects, for which acoustic features are highly relevant (e.g.,“telephone”), ignited cell assemblies in posterior superior and middle temporal gyri (pSTG/MTG) within 150 ms that were also activated by sound perception. Importantly, activity within a cluster of pSTG/MTG increased selectively as a function of acoustic, but not of visual and action-related feature relevance. The implicitness of the conceptual task, the selective modulation of left pSTG/MTG activity by acoustic feature relevance, the early onset of this activity at 150 ms and its anatomical overlap with perceptual sound processing are four markers for a modality-specific representation of auditory conceptual features in left pSTG/MTG. Our results therefore provide the first direct evidence for a link between perceptual and conceptual acoustic processing. They demonstrate that access to concepts involves a partial reinstatement of brain activity during the perception of objects.

Executive control is disturbed in schizophrenia: evidence from event-related potentials in a Go/NoGo task

BACKGROUND Schizophrenic patients suffer from cognitive and attentional deficits, particularly from failure of executive control functions. METHODS This study investigated the cortical organization of executive control in schizophrenic patients and healthy control subjects using event-related potentials (ERPs). Event-related potentials were collected while subjects performed an auditory Go/NoGo task that required response inhibition. To exclude stimulus discriminability and early stimulus processing to confound results, stimuli were adjusted to the subjects individual discrimination ability and were presented in a simple and a difficult version. RESULTS Schizophrenic patients performed similar to control subjects in the Go condition but worse than control subjects in the NoGo condition that required response inhibition. Event-related potentials revealed the neurophysiological substrate of this dysfunction. In the Go conditions, both healthy control subjects and schizophrenic patients showed the same voltage pattern. In the NoGo condition, control subjects and patients showed similar cortical activation only during early processing (N2 time window). However, in later stages of processing (P3 time window), healthy subjects showed left lateralization of ERPs over frontal areas while schizophrenic patients did not. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that schizophrenic patients exhibit deficient processing in a neuronal network, including left frontal areas, that is involved in later stages of executive control function.

Attentional sensitization of unconscious cognition: Task sets modulate subsequent masked semantic priming

According to classical theories, automatic processes are autonomous and independent of higher level cognitive influence. In contrast, the authors propose that automatic processing depends on attentional sensitization of task-congruent processing pathways. In 3 experiments, the authors tested this hypothesis with a modified masked semantic priming paradigm during a lexical decision task by measuring event-related potentials (ERPs): Before masked prime presentation, participants attended an induction task either to semantic or perceptual stimulus features designed to activate a semantic or perceptual task set, respectively. Semantic priming effects on the N400 ERP component, an electrophysiological index of semantic processing, were obtained when a semantic task set was induced immediately before subliminal prime presentation, whereas a previously induced perceptual task set attenuated N400 priming. Across experiments, comparable results were obtained regardless of the difficulty level and the verbal or nonverbal nature of the induction tasks. In line with the proposed attentional sensitization model, unconscious semantic processing is enhanced by a semantic and attenuated by a perceptual task set. Hence, automatic processing of unconscious stimuli is susceptible to top-down control for optimizing goal-related information processing.
