Cost and energy consumption analysis of advanced WDM-PONs

Klaus Grobe; Markus Roppelt; Achim Autenrieth; Jörg-Peter Elbers; Michael Eiselt

Next-generation access systems will have to provide bandwidths in excess of 100 Mb/s per residential customer, in conjunction with high customer count and high maximum reach. Potential systems solutions include several variants of WDM-PONs. These systems, however, differ significantly in their cost (capital expenditures) and energy consumption potential. We compare several WDM-PON concepts, including hybrid WDM-PON with integrated per-wavelength multiple access, with regard to these parameters. We also show the impact and importance of generic next-generation bandwidth and reach requirements.

Tuning of an SG-Y branch laser for WDM-PON

Markus Roppelt; Michael Eiselt; Klaus Grobe; Joerg-Peter Elbers

We report wideband tuning and wavelength stabilization of a low-cost SG-Y branch laser without cooler over >;10°C temperature drift by means of a wavelength locker which is shared between all channels in a WDM-PON system.

Investigation of wavelength control methods for next generation passive optical access networks

Stephan Pachnicke; Markus Roppelt; Michael Eiselt; Anthony Magee; Peter Turnbull; Jörg-Peter Elbers

We present a study on wavelength stability requirements for next generation passive optical network (PON) access systems in the light of induced timing jitter. Based on these findings different realization options of wavelength control methods for use in wavelength tunable PON systems are investigated.

Experimental demonstration of a new pilot tone generation method

Markus Roppelt; Mirko Lawin; Michael Eiselt

We experimentally demonstrate a line encoding based pilot tone generation method and compare it to conventional schemes. The proposed method leaves intact the high speed signal quality and can be used with standard optical transceivers.
