Morningness-eveningness dimension in humans have been indicated to influence social behavior and individual health. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of the morningness-eveningness dimension with behavioral and health aspects in a sample of undergraduate students. We assessed demographic data; the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate sleep quality; the Morningness/Eveningness Questionnaire to determine morningness-eveningness, and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire to assess minor psychiatric disorders. A total of 372 students (66.7% females), on average 21.6 years old, participated in this study. Among them, 92.2% did not smoke, 58.9% engaged in physical activities, and 19.7% were night-shift workers. In regard to morningness-eveningness, 55.9% of the participants were intermediate between evening (39.5%) and morning (4.6%) types. Poor sleep quality (OR = 1.89), minor psychiatric disorders (OR = 1.92), and tobacco consumption (OR = 3.65) predominated among evening types. Evening types were predominantly males (OR = 1.72). This study suggests that evening types are more vulnerable to sleep and psychiatric disturbances, and tend to smoke more than morning types.

Obesity increases morbidity and mortality rates and is a public health problem. A cross-sectional study involving 123 participants was carried out in order to identify the proportion of cases and risk factors among the overweight/obese elderly who receive care from four Family Health Strategy teams in the city of Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil. Obesity was considered the dependent variable and the remaining others as independent: gender, age, family income, education, occupation, physical activity, smoking, medication. The following anthropometric measurements were taken: weight, height, waist circumference, hip, and neck. We conducted bivariate analysis using the chi-square test with a <0.05 significance level. In the multiple model, the factors waist circumference (p=0.000) and neck circumference (p=0.000) remained associated with obesity among the elderly. In the group studied, excess weight / obesity has reached a proportion of 49.6%. The results indicate the high prevalence of excess weight/obesity, reinforcing the need for strategies from health professionals who seek wellness and longevity

Introduction: There is evidence that as individuals age, chronic non communicable diseases become the leading causes of morbidity, disability, and mortality worldwide. Objective: This study aimed to identify risk factors for systemic arterial hypertension in the elderly of a Center for Reference and Care for the Elderly. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study is nestled in the Longitudinal Study of the Center for Reference and Attention to the Elderly (Elo-Creati). The risk factors investigated were: alcohol consumption, tobacco use, family history of systemic arterial hypertension, level of physical activity and nutritional status. Demographic and socioeconomic variables were also investigated. Data analysis was performed using absolute and relative simple frequencies, and Chi-square test. Results: A total of 313 elderly women were evaluated, 262 (84.5%) were white, the majority ranging from 60 to 69 years old (57.2%; n=179) and belonging to economic class B (52.1%; n=162). From all female elderly participants in this study, 187 (59.9%) reported systemic arterial hypertension, and the associated factors were: economic class, BMI and level of physical activity (p<0.05). Conclusion: Among the risk factors studied, family history of hypertension, overweight and physical inactivity were more prevalent. Thus, actions of public agencies and private sectors are suggested to effective face this reality.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia and chronic pain are geriatric syndromes that negatively impact the lives of the affected elderly, their families and the routine of health services, as is the case of long-term care institutions for the elderly. The objective of this study was to verify the relationship between sarcopenia and chronic pain in institutionalized elderly women. METHODS: A cross-sectional, population-based study was carried out in 24 long-term care institutions for the elderly, in Passo Fundo/RS (December 2016 June 2017). The population was composed of 161 residents in these places, submitted to an instrument structured in 23 blocks. In this study, blocks A (type of institution), B (sociodemographic variables), F (sarcopenia) and G (chronic pain) were used. Blocks A, B and G were evaluated using the elderly self-report and the block F through the SARC-F Questionnaire. The statistical analysis used the descriptive statistics and the chi-square test with Pearson’s relation (p≤0.05). RESULTS: The sample consisted of 79 elderly women (81.38±8.79 years). The majority between 80 to 89 years, living in private institutions, white, widowed and with 1 to 8 years of education. It was observed that 62% had sarcopenia and 41.8% chronic pain, and these variables were associated (p=0.033). There was no association between sarcopenia or chronic pain with age (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: There was an association between sarcopenia and chronic pain in institutionalized elderly women. Resume Objective: to identify the prevalence of falls among older adults and the extrinsic factors associated with them. Method: population-based cross-sectional study with 350 older adults. A household survey was conducted using a questionnaire addressing socio-demographic, clinical, and environmental characteristics. Data were analyzed using Stata Software V.10. Pearson’s chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used with stepwise criteria for selection of variables in the model, with measures of effect expressed in Prevalence Ratio. For input into the multiple model, the variables with p ≤ 0.20 were considered. All ethical care regarding research on human beings has been observed and respected. Results: the prevalence of falls was 46.9%. The extrinsic factors associated with falls were: stairs, uneven floor and pets in the main entrance, lack of anti-slip loose throw rugs and slippery floor in the kitchen, lack of anti-slip loose throw rugs and objects on the floor in the room, lack of grab bars in the shower, lack of grab bars in the toilet and switch away from the bathroom door (p <0.05). Conclusion: falls are frequent in long-lived adults. The identification of the extrinsic factors associated with the occurrence of this event can help in its prevention.
