Surface scaling resistance of concrete modified with bituminous addition

Marta Kosior-Kazberuk; Walery Jezierski

Abstract Deterioration of concrete due to surface scaling is a very serious durability problem faced by the construction industry in cold environments. The experimental results of resistance to scaling due to cyclic freezing and thawing in the presence of 3 % NaCl solution (de‐icing agent) of not air‐entrained concrete with and without bituminous addition are presented and discussed in the paper. The results have been analysed using the analysis of variance and regression to verify the effect of addition content, number of freeze‐thaw cycles and the sort of cement on concrete ability to scaling. The statistical analysis showed that the bituminous addition significantly improves the scaling resistance of Portland cement concrete.

Evaluation of concrete resistance to chloride ions penetration by means of electric resistivity monitoring

Marta Kosior-Kazberuk; Walery Jezierski

Abstract The chloride‐induced corrosion of reinforcing steel is the major reason for the premature deterioration and degradation of field concrete structures built in a salt‐laden environment. The results of investigation of the bituminous addition effect on Portland cement concrete resistance to chloride ions penetration are presented in this paper. Chloride penetration was simulated by subjecting samples to cyclic loading with salt solution and drying. Concrete resistivity development was monitored during 12 months. The test results have been analysed to verify the effect of addition content, the time of exposure in aggressive environment, as well as the sort of cement on chloride ion permeability of Portland cement concrete. The statistical analysis showed that bituminous addition significantly improves the concrete resistance to chloride salt solution penetration.

Civil engineering education programs — State-of-the-Art in Poland

P. Berkowski; Marta Kosior-Kazberuk

During the last decade there was made a great change in the Polish higher education system. As Poland joined the Bologna Process and began to take part in creation of the European Higher Education Area, there arose a need to redevelop the higher education system and to revise educational programs with an aim to adapt them both to changes in the philosophy of teaching as well as to the demands of social and economic environment. In case of the Polish technical universities first it was done a change for two-level system (BSc and MSc in engineering) starting from the predominant to that time one-cycle 5-year-system (MSc). Then, the ideas of education and professional recognition based on learning outcomes and qualifications framework were introduced.

Method of prediction of thermal conductivity coefficient of wall materials containing salts

Marta Kosior-Kazberuk; Valeriy Ezerskiy

Abstract The salt presence in porous structure of wall materials causes changes in thermal conductivity. The real value of material thermal conductivity in service conditions is necessary for engineering applications. The method of prediction of the thermal conductivity coefficient for wall materials containing salt using corrective factor is presented in the paper. By means of corrective coefficients, for well-known content of moisture and salt in wall material, it is possible to calculate thermal conductivity coefficient with regard to the presence of specific salt or mix of salts in material. The corrective coefficient values were determined for different groups of salts. The partition of salts into groups was made by means of cluster analysis, in dependence on their influence on material thermal conductivity. Clustering, in data mining, is a useful tool for discovering groups and identifying interesting distributions in the underlying data.
