Many citizens are currently involved in a re-evaluation of traditional sex roles and their limitations .... Each of us is living in a period of profound social change. As individuals and as professionals, we are being called upon to re-examine many of our most basic perceptions, values, and behaviors. As our society struggles to respond to pressures for a restructuring of societal institutions and more equitable access to these institutions and their benefits for all groups of persons, educators will likewise be required to respond. One pressure for change that has emerged in society and in education is our growing awareness of the nature and prevalence of sex discrimination and sex role stereotyping. Many citizens are currently involved in a reevaluation of traditional sex roles and their limitations for women, men, and the optimal development of our society. Our societal goal of equality of opportunity for all can never be attained until educators, both as individuals and professionals, respond to this pressure for reevaluation. Schools and departments of education have experienced significant developments in the area of women’s studies and sex role awareness. Progress has been made, but existing efforts must be supplemented and expanded if women’s studies in education are to fulfill their potential as a means of achieving a more effective education for all individuals. It is now important to assess those efforts which have been made and to consider new directions for the future.
