The text is organized topically and chronologically within each chapter. The books eight main chapters address the origins of the movement, Asian American identity and culture, the Asian American womens movement, the Asian American alternative press, the development of Asian American studies, community organizations, the rise and decline of Maoist groups, and the shift from radical to electoral politics. Wei thus unravels a complex history of individuals, organizations, publications, and intellectual positions. However, the topical organization of the book presents issues that are interrelated and overlapping in a fragmented and sometimes repetitive narrative structure, offering one aspect of an issue in one chapter and then another aspect in a later chapter. Despite this minor shortcoming, Weis study is an important record of the development of an Asian American consciousness and the struggle for social empowerment through political activism.

itself is a stabilizing and unifying factor in America, in the sense that it is almost unanimously rejected, this part of the demonstration should be put into perspective. Lastly,a lacuna arises from the fact that the AfricaAmerican experience is not dealt with in the book. Applying an au-contrario reasoning, it would seem that Harles suggests that, contrary to immigrants, blacks could be a destabilizing factor for the American democracy. Asa matter of fact, they have no reason to be grateful to the United States and to show allegiance to a society which often they have not voluntarily come to and which has been excluding a large part of them. If this were a correct reading of something which, admittedly, is not explicitly stated in this book, it would mean that Harles admits the validity of traditional democratic wisdom about ethnic diversity as far as blacks are concerned. And this would raise some doubts about his own alternative perspective. Despite these remarks, Politics in the Liftboat is a stimulating and innovative book which allows that political science can produce an extremely valuable discourse in the field of migration.
