South African Historical Journal | 2000

This bibliography began as an experiment in the South African Historical Journal in 1993. Since then it has gained a following and the audience has grown. The historiography of southern Africa has also grown during this time, which has turned a labour of love into a research enterprise. The work of one enthusiastic librarian is no longer enough to sustain the project; Hleziphi Napaai has therefore agreed to help. Moreover, the simple format of references in alphabetical order according to author seemed adequate for the first five or six bibliographies, but it has now become unmanageable and has made the collection of bibliographies less accessible. We have tried unsuccessfully over the past few years to persuade sponsors to fund a consolidated bibliography with an author and subject index. There appears to be no market for published bibliographies despite the fact that these are indispensable tools ofhistorical and other research. We have therefore decided that after the next one, which will listjournal articles and theses from 1997 to 1999, we will use a new software programme to index references to research published from 2000. This will allow us to offer a printed version in the Journal as well as an electronic version on the Internet. The Internet bibliography will include a keywordsubject index. We hope this will satisfy those readers of the Journal who have complained that it is unusable in its present form. We will, however, continue to pursue our goal to consolidate the references in the bibliographies that have appeared in the Journal and eventually make it available on the Internet. Since the bibliography below tries ambitiously to bring us up to date on books published between 1996 and 1999, we are sure that we have overlooked many important works. We can only reiterate that it is a select bibliography, based on databases available to us at the University of South Africa. It does not pretend to be complete in any way, but it does follow the main contours of historical research on southern Africa in its variety and profusion. It is quite striking how prodigious scholarship has been in this field, notwithstanding the crisis in higher education in South Africa in recent times.

It begins with material published since 2000 but a retrospective project to include material from 1990 is underway. We would be grateful for any comments or criticisms which might improve the database. Mary-Lynn Suttie Hleziphi Napaai Tel: 012 429 3098 Tel: 012 ..

We strongly believe that both versions will be useful to subscribers; print because it represents a more permanent resource, and electronic because it offers extra search features, such as a keywordhubject index. It has long been our ambition to consolidate the South African Historical Journal bibliography which reflects historical and other social-science scholarship during South Africa’s first democratic decade. This will be done gradually on our website. The print version will, however, offer only the latest bibliographic data relating to books, chapters, reviews, journal articles, theses and obituaries, thus extending our published enterprise incrementally. Once again, we ask authors to send us references if their relevant work is not listed here. We can then update the website so that eventually it may achieve a greater comprehensiveness. We also welcome any constructive suggestions about how to improve the website. Our e-mail addresses are napaasn(ii,unisa.ac.za and [email protected] respectively. This project has been ably assisted by Ansie Watkins, Kataila Ramalibana and Sandra Hartzer of the University of South Africa Library, who patiently tutored us in the use of Inmagic software and helped us design the website.
