Many of the known submillimeter wave emissions of 1,1-difluoroethylene are assigned by using new data from infrared diode laser heterodyne spectroscopy. Six new submillimeter lines are also reported and assigned.

Abstract Submillimeter wave laser action has been previously reported in deuterated fluoroform (CDF3) which is optically pumped by a CO2 laser. In this paper, accurate frequency measurements are reported for 23 laser emissions. Of these lines, 21 can be assigned to the ν5 degenerate vibrational state. The data were fitted with a theoretical expression for the transitions containing terms up to sixth order in J and K and also containing all important doubling effects. The quality of the fit was very good, yielding accurate values for many of the molecular constants of the ν5 state.

Submillimeter wave laser emission is repotted in13CD<inf>3</inf>F. Ten lines were obtained by optical pumping with a conventional CO<inf>2</inf>laser.

Linear absorption coefficients and photoinduced changes in the absorption coefficient are experimentally determined for two doping superlattice structures. The linear values are compared with the values for a semi‐insulating and an n‐doped substrate of GaAs. The results for the absorption and light‐induced absorption changes are qualitatively consistent with a Franz–Keldysh analysis.

Submillimeter wave laser action is reported for the first time in chlorodifluoromethane and ethyl iodide. Five new laser transitions have been produced by optical pumping with a chopped CO 2 laser.

Over 300 new submillimeter-wave laser emission lines are predicted for the ν 5 band of deuterated fluoroform (CDF 3 ) when isotopic CO 2 and N 2 O infrared pump lasers are used. These lines are calculated by using recently derived molecular constants that were determined by fitting known infrared, microwave, and submillimeter-wave transitions in CDF 3 . The calculated emissions (estimated accuracy generally within ± 1 MHz) should be useful to those with specific wavelength requirements. The molecule provides a rich choice of frequencies at approximately 20 GHz intervals extending from about 40 GHz to beyond 1 THz. This approach eliminates much of the usual trial-and-error technique of finding new submillimeter-wave emission lines.
