Mizue Kayama; Makoto Satoh; Masaaki Niimura; Hasami Hashimoto; Makoto Otani

The purpose of this study is to develop a learning support system for algorithmic thinking for novices. In this paper, we introduce an eassesment functions based on the Student-Problem (SP) score table analysis method. At first, we show an overview of our research and the SP score table analysis. Then, some practical trials with this method are described.

We are currently developing a Regional Protection System in which children have terminals, and transponders installed at various locations receive packets sent from these terminals via a Specified Low-Power Radio System. The packets are then transmitted to a server so the positions of the children can be inferred from that information. With the ARIB STD-T67 access protocol used in this system, collisions frequently occur at locations where there are many terminals. Therefore, the authors improved a protocol in which frequent collisions do not occur, even when as many as 150 terminals gather in the same place. However, it was impossible to prevent frequent collisions when many terminals are concentrated in one place, such as in a school. A new access protocol was developed in this research to deal with this problem. In this protocol, transmission by terminals is suppressed at specific locations, and then resumed after the terminal moves away from those locations. However, the position of a terminal must not be lost when its transmission is being restricted. In this presentation, we propose this new access protocol, and evaluate its effectiveness.

Shinshu University Graduate School of Science and Technology on the Internet (SUGSI) is established in 2002 as the first Internet University in Japan. In SUGSI, students can learn every lecture using a CAI system featuring drills on the web, and get supervising about a masters thesis from faculty adviser via network. Therefore, students can complete a master course and get a masters degree without commuting to the school. We manage SUGSI on day school system, and we developed some student support systems as well as learning contents with CAI. In this paper, we mention about the learning system of SUGSI: its CAI contents, a student management system, and the profile of enrolled students such as their age structure and their learning style.

A high-speed processing LSI for RSA cryptograms using an improved adder circuit

Masaaki Niimura; Yasushi Fuwa

In this work we propose a high-speed calculating method using a signed-digit number system and describe a high speed LSI developed based on this method for RSA cryptogram processing. Operations for the RSA cryptogram take a long time because they require a great deal of calculations. To improve operation speeds we proposed in our earlier work calculating method using a general radix-2/sup k/ signed-digit number system and develop LSI for RSA cryptogram processing. In this work, we improve this radix-2/sup k/ signed-digit number system to make it easy to implement in hardware. By applying this method to LSI, we achieve processing speeds 9 times faster than the previous method.

Implementing an In-Home Sensor Agent in Conjunction with an Elderly Monitoring Network

Katsumi Wasaki; Masaaki Niimura; Nobuhiro Shimoi

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the in-home sensor agent MaMoRu-Kun as an Internet of Things (IoT) smart device, developed via the “Research and development of the regional/solitary elderly life support system using multi-fusion sensors” project. At Akita Prefectural University, the bed and pillow sensors and corresponding monitoring system have been developed to watch elderly individuals at bedtime, in particular those who live alone. As a sensor agent, MaMoRu-Kun is connected to the in-home wireless network of the target individuals accommodations and collects trigger information from various switches, motion detection sensors, and a remote controller. This smart device is also able to send its entire set of data along with the status of the sensor to a collection and monitoring server connected via a long-term evolution (LTE) router. We implemented this agent using an Arduino and a Bluetooth-connected Android terminal.

A Multi-agent Approach to Smart Home Sensors for the Elderly based on an Open Hardware Architecture: A Model for Participatory Evaluation.

Katsumi Wasaki; Masaaki Niimura; Nobuhiro Shimoi

In this position paper, we present the design and implementation of an in-home sensor agent as an Internet of Things (IoT) smart device system based on an open hardware architecture. This sensor agent is designed to be connected to a wireless network in the target individual’s home where it collects trigger information from various switches, motion detection sensors in the room, along with the pillow and bed. We began our study by conducting a complete requirement analysis to determine the functions required for the home sensors. Next, we examined the proposed system terms of its hardware and software requirements and fabricated working prototypes. Here, it should be noted that the hardware and software were designed to aggregate connections with various composite sensor devices in order to allow trigger collection and processing. Finally, we reviewed visualization techniques for displaying the analytical results of the monitoring under normal conditions and emergency situations.

Proposal for a Study of a Method for Monitoring Study Progress in Database Exercises in the Classroom Using the Audit Log

Masaaki Niimura; Takashi Yokoyama

Structured Query Language (SQL) is widely used to operate Relational Databases (RDBs), and to operate an RDB with SQL, an application called an SQL Client is used. Recently, many SQL Clients have been developed and have become more users friendly. An SQL Client is very useful for learning SQL, but it is not designed for the classroom. There are some problems associated with classroom use. One problem is that the teacher cannot monitor the learners progress, and in any case, it is difficult to add such a function to an SQL Client. In this paper, we propose a method for gathering information for monitoring study progress on the RDB side using an Audit Log. With this method, learners can use any SQL Client. We have developed an experimental system to implement this method and evaluate its use in the classroom.

Proposal of a Supporting System for Planning, Executing and Reflecting Tasks in Research Activities

Kenya Miyamoto; Masaaki Niimura

Abstract Many students and graduate students are imposed research activities for 1-3 years in Japan. Some of them make plans of their research activities; however, they worry about they cannot make progress. We develop a system to support planning, execution and reflecting their tasks in their research activities. This paper describes the overview of the system and proposes functionalities for promote their self-regulation activities in their research activities.

Proposal of an Automatic Composition Method of Piano Works for Novices Based on an Analysis of Study Items in Early Stages of Piano Education

Mio Iwaki; Masaaki Niimura

This paper proposes an automatic composition method of piano works for novices. Because, there is a shortage of piano works suitable for various learning stages in existing textbooks. At first, this study analyzed and systematized the study items in the learning process of the textbooks. This study also confirmed that the study items are adequate to represent the learning stage of each piano works in the textbooks. This study then defined the restrictions on the piano works for novices according to learning stages. Finally, this study proposes the automatic composition method based on the learning stages and their restrictions. This paper describes these learning items, their restrictions, and the proposed method. Additionally, this paper shows an example of piano works composed with the proposed method.
