Development of training simulator for MSFE desalination plant

Masahiro Kishi; K. Hattori; M. Tatsumoto; S. Koyama

Abstract In order to meet increasing need for operators training, fully equipped training simulator has been developed and used successfully in the training cource for our client operators. Training simulator consists of the followings: 1. i) Detailed real-time process simulation models 2. ii) Digital Control System (DCS) for process control, monitoring and operation 3. iii) Local operation panel 4. iv) Instructors console Not only Central Control Room (CCR) operation, but also field preparatory operation can be trained by this system, with the wide range operation mode from the normal start-up/load change/shutdown to the emergency troubles. Instructors console is provided to preset the process condition, monitor the trainee operation, evaluate the training and return the mis-actioned point in the training course. This effective and powerful training aids was shown the expected performance on the training course.

Development of flow model for weir type orifice

Masahiro Kishi; K. Matsumoto; Y. Takeuchi; K. Hattori

Abstract The weir type orifice is widely used as an interstage sealing device of an MSF evaporator and as a flow regulating device of brine and distillate flows. The existing flow model for a weir type orifice is described simply as an orifice without any consideration to weir hydraulic characteristics. The inaccurate level estimation requires repetitive trial orifice adjustments. A new flow model has been developed in a combination of a submerged sluice gate and a weir. This model allows us to estimate the effect of various parameters such as flow rate, gate edge shape, weir height, liquid level, flow load, gate opening, etc. The calculated level pattern shows a good consistence not only with experimental data acquired by a prototype evaporator but with operation data of large scale plants. With an application of the new model, the orifice flow characteristics are described as follows: 1. A wide range of operation can be performed by changing weir height instead of changing gate opening. 2. The round edge gate is useful for a small interstage pressure difference such as in a heat rejection section. The developed flow models are applied for the development of an automatic control system.

New electrodialyser system with automatic chemical cleaning

Masahiro Kishi; Satoru Serizawa; Mamoru Nakano

Heterogeneous ion exchange membranes consisted of ion exchange resin particles finely dispersed in polypropylene matrix, have good electrical and mechanical properties and excellent resistance against high temperature and chemicals. Any foulant adhered on membranes can be completely removed by high concentration acid and/or alkali cleaning. The Electrodialyser using these membranes have been developed and it can resist up to 3 kg/cm2G against inner pressure. The Electrodialyser has been applied to the desalination of the river water of Shatt Al Arab in Iraq since July, 1976. Though it is quickly fouled by organic matter and others in raw water, it has been confirmed that capability had been completely recovered by cleaning using 3ξ caustic soda and dilute acid, and continuous operation around 6,000 hr without desassembling had been successfully carried on. Evaluating the above, desalination plant for boiler feed water of fertilizer plant of Iraq Government is being under construction and will start on April 1978. This plant is consisted of two trains, each train has capacity of 208 m3/hr and can be automatically cleaned within 3 hours. Simulated dynamics by digital computer are shown.

Development of flashing flow model for box type orifice

Masahiro Kishi; Y. Mochizuki; M. Matsubayashi; K. Hattori

Abstract To stabilize water level in flash evaporators, flashing model is discussed and a flow model of two phase flashing flow is established. This model is applied to the flow in the box type orifice, in good accordance with the calculated results and the experimental data. A parameter survey of water level in actual plant shows the water level control may be stable.
