In the present paper, the problem of determining the effect of a triangular or a rectangular notch, both with rounded corners, on a semi-infinite plate under a uniform tension applied parallel to the straight boundary is treated by the complex-variable method, associated with the name of Muskhelishvili. The parametric coefficients included in the solution are determined by a method of perturbation. In order to clarify the stress distributions along the rim of the notch and on the symmetrical axis of the plate, numerical calculations are worked out. The stress concentration factor in the plate is also computed for various shapes of the notch and the effect of the each shape of the notch exerting on the factor is studied.

In the present paper, as a two dimensional problem of elasticity, the problem of the stress distribution in a hollow ovaloid cylinder is solved under the condition of internal pressure. As an example of the present analysis, first, the values of stresses at any point in a hollow ovaloid cylinder under the condition of locally distributed internal pressure were obtained numerically and, finally, the state of stress at any point in the cylinder was clarified. Thus, the values of stresses obtained here were compared with the results of the photo-elastic investigation on an elliptical chain link due to E. G. Coker and L. N. G. Filon and discussed anew somewhat in detail. As another similar example, the values of stresses at any point in an infinite plate having an ovaloid hole under the same condition of loading mentioned above were obtained numerically and the state of stress etc. at any point in the plate was also clarified.

In the present paper, as a two dimensional problem of elasticity, the problem of the stress distribution in a thick cylinder having a regular-polygonal hole the corners of which are rounded is solved under the condition of internal pressure. As an example of the present analysis, the value of stresses at any point in a thick cylinder having a square hole the corners of which are slightly rounded were numerically obtained and the state of stress distribution in it was clarified. And these values of stresses were compared with the results obtained for the case of an infinite plate having a similar hole in it and discussed somewhat in detail.
