Magnesium oxide is an efficient catalyst for the cycloaddition of ncarbon dioxide to epoxides under mild conditions; the reaction of carbon ndioxide with (R)-styrene oxide in the presence of magnesium oxide ngives (R)-phenyl carbonate in 97% ee with retention of nstereochemistry.

Abstract The thermal-reaction of isopropyl diphenylphosphinite with 10-methylacridinuim iodide results in the formation of a phosphonium ion through a polar process, whereas the reaction under the irradation of light affords 10-methylacridan as well as isopropyl diphenylphosphinate through single electron transfer (SET) from the former to the latter.

Remarkably stable self-assembled monolayer and polymer films composed of a new tetrathiafulvalenyl-tetrathiol have been formed on metal electrodes: this is a new class of surface modification by self-assembly and electrochemical polymerization using the same alkane-tetrathiol.

The calcination of a (niobium-O-phenylene-S)- (cadmium-S- phenylene-O) hybrid copolymer under an argon atmosphere gave nano-sized Nb 2 O 5 / carbon clusters / CdS hybrid material. ESR spectral examinations suggest the possibility of an electron transfer in the process of Nb 2 O 5 → carbon clusters → CdS → carbon clusters.
