A Mie scattering laser radar with a powerful flashlamp-pumped dye laser has been developed to measure “Yamase” fog which is caused by very cold air intrusion as a result of Okhotsk high pressure. The inner structure of the “Yamase” fog—height profile, horizontal distribution, speed, thickness of the fog layer and its time development, periodic movement and dominant periods were observed and analyzed for the first time by laser radar of our institute.

A new fogliquefier has been developed and demonstrated in a laboratory and an outdoor field. Fog charged by corona discharge is attracted toward the inversely polarized electrode and instantaneously liquefild. Outdoor experiments were successfully performed at a rice field with a newly invented electrostatic fogliquefier.

The polarization switching characteristics of PLLZT10/65/35, PLZT5/65/35 and PZT65/35 ceramics were investigated. The switching time and switching current density were read from the transient wave form. The switching time ts of PZT65/35, PLZT5/65/35 and PLLZT10/65/35 ceramics were 86µs, 105µs and 125µs at 30°C, respectively. The electric field dependence of switching time can be described by a well-known formula ts=kE-n. The photoelectric response of some FE/PC devices was elucidated.

A FE/PC sandwich memory device was constracted using a transparent ceramic, a photoconductive CdS film and transparent NESA electrodes. Electro-optic properties of the device were measured with light pulses under various measuring conditions such as various applied voltages, irradiation times and luminous intensities. The light intensity stronger than 4000 lx was found to be neccessary to write signals onto the device.

Nonlinear optical characteristics of transparent PLLZT ceramics have been examined. The ceramic samples have been prepared by various hot-pressing temperatures, pressures and soaking times, and optimum fabrication condition has been experimentally decided by the density, average grain diameter and optical transmittance measurements. An intense SHG light was observed for the first time on PLLZT ceramics when the ceramics were pumped by a Q-switched high repetition rate Nd3+ glass laser light. A conversion efficiency was about 0.17% at 13 MW pump power.
