In order to reduce ship operating costs for large oil tankers, it is effective to burn crude oil as a fuel. For this purpose, the authors have performed tests of burning many sorts of crude oil for diesel engines. The results obtained for the combustibility of crude oil with engines were good and the availability of crude oil as a fuel for diesel engines was proved. As known already, crude oil is available for boilers as a fuel. However, it has not become popular in practice on accounting the hazard of flamability by its gasified disposition. Accordingly, the authors carried out extended works for the hazard evalution in the case of using crude oil in practice and for the means of burning crude oil safely. As the results, the density of flamable gases leaked from the fuel piping was less than expectation even in the vicinity of engines. Also, it was evident that crude oil can replace residual oil as a fuel sufficiently if the proper way is taken into account

The increased use of large diesel engines lead to this investigation on the use of crude oil as diesel engine fuel. In the tanker trade a large economic saving could be made if crude oil could be successfully burned in diesel engines. The tests performed in Part I dealt with engine performance, abrasion, and evaporation. Crude oils were compared with Bunker grades A, B and C. Results indicate that this crude oil does not require any engine design changes. However, it does require ignition timing change. Accelerated cylinder liner wear can be reduced by changing the type of lube oil used. The high wax content of some crude oils may require preheating equipment for successful combustion. Part II of the report deals with the safe handling of crude oil in the bunker and engineering spaces. The gas content of crude oil is higher than refined products and therefore presents a hazard in confined areas and tanks. Tank vents need small size screening and good ventilation should be provided in machinery spaces to disperse any gas accumulation caused by leakage. It is to be considered as safe as other oil fuels.

As aluminum alloy is the most promising anode among various kinds of galvanic anodes from economical point of view, we have tried to make performance test on many kinds of aluminum anodes. These results are reported in this paper. Al-In-Zn alloy anode is found to be for superior to other kinds of aluminum anode. The aluminum anode is effective in use of ship hull and ballast tank excluding oil tanker. To make use of the aluminum anode in ballast tank of oil tanker, We must pay attention to the shape of anode and anode current density etc.
