Traumatic disruptions of right upper bronchus and truncus intermedius in a five-year-old boy

Chia-Ming Hsieh; Hiroyoshi Ayabe; Katsunobu Kawahara; Masatoshi Mori; Koji Kimino; Masao Tomita

A case of uncommon ruptures of right upper bronchus and truncus intermedius in a 5-year-old boy is presented. Two operations provided bronchial continuity, with insertion of an 18-gauge catheter required at the second operation. Problems in anastomosis and early postoperative management in small airways of growing children are also discussed.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura presenting satellite tumors

Koichi Fujiu; Hideaki Miyamoto; Hideo Sakuma; Masatoshi Mori

A 29-year-old man presented with a mass in the left lower lung field on a chest radiograph obtained during a medical checkup. Computed tomography revealed a tumor adjacent to the diaphragm. A sessile tumor measuring 10.5 × 8.5 × 4.5 cm arising from the parietal pleura was resected. The tumor was accompanied by several little tumors on the nearby diaphragm. Pathologically, the major tumor consisted of typical spindle-shaped cells with myxoid degeneration. There was no increased cellularity, cellular pleomorphism, or a high mitotic count. In immunohistochemical studies, the spindle cells showed positive staining for CD34 and were negative for bcl-2. The smaller tumors also consisted of myxoid degeneration. We diagnosed benign solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with satellite tumors. We must be aware of the possibility of satellite tumors when we treat patients with a benign solitary fibrous tumor.

Dip and hump type quantum oscillations in magnetoacoustic attenuation in semimetals

Masatoshi Mori; Masao Koga; Nobuyuki Goto

In the strong magnetic field, the deformation potentials of semimetals themselves make the dip and hump type quantum oscillations due to the change of the densities of states so as to satisfy the charge neutrality condition. When the magnetic field is perpendicular to the propagation direction of the sound, the giant oscillations are smeared by the tilt effect and the change of deformation potentials alone is dominant. Therefore the dip and hump type quantum oscillations appear directly in the line shape of the attenuation of the sound in this configuration. This result accords with the experimental ones for Bi1-xSbx.
