Shrinking nature of diffraction amplitudes due to peripheral inelastic processes

The nature of the diffraction scattering has been discussed in connection with the Regge-type behaviour of the scattering amplitude at high energies (1). In this note we give an intuitive discussion on the shrinking nature due to the one-mesonexchange-dominated inelastic process which is behind these discussions. Let ]~BCD be the partial-wave inelastic amplitude of the quasi-binary process A-kB-~C-kD. The imaginary diffraction amplitude for the elastic process A-kB-+ -~ A + B duc to this inelastic process will be given in the lowest-order approximation as
