In this paper we describe the design and implementation of the VDL Generator, a tool to simplify and automatise the Digital Library development process. In particular, we discuss how our approach to the realisation of this tool simplifies the task of implementing, extending and modifying such a fundamental component. This tool models its issue as a generic search problem that can easily be adapted to different application scenarios. In particular, to guarantee its extensibility we carefully identify, isolate and organise the VDL Generator constituents, i.e. (i) the set of logical componentsthat can be used when designing a Digital Library, (ii) the set of physical componentsthat by implementing the logical components contribute to implement the Digital Library and (iii) the search strategyexploited to accomplish the generation task. Furthermore, we report on the experiences matured in implementing and exploiting such an innovative service in the context of the Diligent EU funded project and discuss future plans for its consolidation.

5 Science is in continuous evolution and so are the methodologies and approaches scientists tend to apply by calling for 6 appropriate supporting environments. This is in part due to the limitations of the existing practices and in part due to the new 7 possibilities offered by technology advances. gCube is a software system promoting elastic and seamless access to research assets 8 (data, services, computing) across the boundaries of institutions, disciplines and providers to favour collaborative-oriented research 9 tasks. Its primary goal is to enable Hybrid Data Infrastructures facilitating the dynamic definition and operation of Virtual Research 10 Environments. To this end, it offers a comprehensive set of data management commodities on various types of data and a rich 11 array of “mediators” to interface well-established Infrastructures and Information Systems from various domains. Its effectiveness 12 has been proved by operating the D4Science.org infrastructure and serving concrete, multidisciplinary, challenging, and large scale 13 scenarios. This paper gives an overview of the gCube system. 14

Virtual Research Environments are internet-based working environments tailored to serve needs of diverse and evolving user communities. These environments are oriented to promote new ways of dealing with modern research tasks. Their realization requires user interfaces that are dynamically built to provide their clients with organised views on the data and services aggregated to meet specific community needs. This paper presents an approach to the problem of Virtual Research Environment user interfaces dynamic construction. This approach is characterized by user interfaces built through a component-oriented strategy and an heuristic for user interface constituents arrangement on the screen. The implementation and exploitation of the proposed approach in the context of the D4Science-II EU funded project is discussed as well as future plans are presented.

Open Science calls for innovative approaches and solutions embracing the entire research lifecycle. From the research publishing perspective, the aim is to pursue an holistic approach where publishing includes any product (e.g. articles, datasets, experiments, notebooks, websites) resulting from a research activity and relevant to the interpretation, evaluation, and reuse of the activity or part of it. In this paper, we present the foundational concepts and relationships characterising SciRepo, i.e. an innovative class of scientific repositories that (a) promotes a publishing mechanism blurring the distinction between research lifecycle and its scholarly communication; (b) simplifies the “publishing” of an entire research activity allowing to seamlessly exploit and reuse every research product; and (c) is conceived to be nicely integrated on top of existing research infrastructures.
