The Triglav Glacier between the years 1999 and 2012

Matej Gabrovec; Jaka Ortar; Miha Pavšek; Matija Zorn; Mihaela Triglav Čekada

The Triglav glacier is situated in the Julian Alps in the northwest of Slovenia. Presented are the results of investigations and measurements of the Triglav glacier done between the years 1999 and 2012. It was for the first time during this period that its depth was measured by means of georadar. Its area was measured on a yearly basis by means of various land surveying methods which are stated in detail. We explained the dynamics of the glacier’s shrinking on the grounds of weather conditions of each respective year. Due to the glacier’s concave form, snow in the past few years remained all until the late summer, particularly in the central and lower sections of the glacier. If such weather conditions continue, and the amount of winter precipitation further increases, the remainder of the Triglav glacier, though small in size, will continue to exist for a few years.

Integrated Planning of Public Passenger Transport between the City and the Region: The Case of Ljubljana

David Bole; Matej Gabrovec; Nika Razpotnik Visković

This article draws attention to the connection between transport planning and the settlement pattern and consequently the need for comprehensive planning of both the settlement and transport system. It primarily focuses on the suburbanization of Ljubljana and the state of public passenger transport in the Ljubljana Urban Region. Certain topical transport studies and measures are discussed from this perspective. The analysis shows the need for comprehensive planning that could be realized in the form of the concept of a polycentric layout of the region with interconnected centers as the main bearers of residential and business functions.

Pleistocene glaciation in Mediterranean Slovenia

Abstract Geomorphological research on glacial features in Slovenia has a long tradition; the first studies were published in the late nineteenth century by Brückner. Evidence of glacial erosion and deposition is preserved in the Slovenian Alps and on the highest plateaus of the Dinaric Mountains, including traces of ice fields and ice caps with outlet glaciers on the edges and some valley glaciers. The prevailing bedrock in all the glaciated areas is limestone, forming complex glacio-karst morphological systems. Modern glacial reconstruction techniques have been applied in the last few years, focusing on the interpretation of palaeoglacial topography and local equilibrium-line altitudes. Both past and present studies, however, lack precise chronological frameworks for the glacial advances, which should be the main goal of future research on glaciation in Slovenia.

Geography of Daily Mobilities in Post-Socialist European Countries: Evidence from Slovenia

David Bole; Matej Gabrovec

The recent shift towards recognizing the significance of mobility for society has seen various authors report on both the quantitative increase in people’s mobility within space, and on the new mobility patterns which have emerged over the last few decades (Sheller and Urry 2006; Latham et al. 2009). As cars came into general use in North America and western Europe, for example, largely due to technological development (e.g., the steel and petroleum industries) and governmental measures that promoted the growth of automobile infrastructure (Urry 2007), public (or collective) transport has experienced a significant downturn and now accounts for an average of no more than 20 per cent of all passenger travel in Europe, and even less in North America (Eurostat 2010). Correspondingly, researchers have become increasingly interested in the rise of ‘automobility’ in western society, and its cause and effect.
