Abstract Direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engines represent a major challenge to control system engineers because of the advanced hardware configuration and stringent performance requirements. In this paper, we explore several new control issues associated with the design and implementation of a DISI system. A control system development process that integrates system modeling, optimization and rapid prototyping will be reviewed. Air charge control and engine torque management will be discussed in detail to illustrate the “control critical” nature of the DISI engines. Some analytical and experimental results will be presented to demonstrate the benefits of the combined approach of model based analytical design with dynamometer and vehicle based experimental validation/verification.
