Corporate social responsibility and SME’s competitiveness

Caterina Tantalo; Matteo Giuliano Caroli; Jeff Vanevenhoven

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is both a core and emerging issue in management. Recently, many contributions were developed by scholars and practitioners to better understand the phenomenon and its practical relevance for the corporations. However, defining the phenomenon and the specific characteristics it assumes particular to individual corporations is challenging. Moreover, it is directly linked to the perceptions and values of managerial personal, the specific characteristics of the business, and the size of the corporations. Many contributions have been developed to investigate the relationship between the CSR and the corporate social performance (CSP) of the corporations but inconsistent results were found and very little is known about the phenomenon inside the small and medium sized firms (Spence, 1999, 2007; Thompson and Smith, 1991). This paper tries to investigate this research problem following an empirical approach based on direct interviews to the CEOs of Italian small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) which developed successful CSR strategies.

Total nucleated cells as a sole predictor of distinct targets of hematopoietic potential (CD34+ cells) in cord blood units: the results of a large series analysis in autologous cord blood units

Rapid identification of eligible cord blood units (CBUs) for banking is an important issue in hematopoietic stem cell procurement. Distinct contents of CD34+ cells in CBU can contribute to identify grafts that may be banked also for unrelated transplants or limited to family‐directed or autologous use.

Exploring Social Innovation Components and Attributes: A Taxonomy Proposal

Matteo Giuliano Caroli; Eleonora Fracassi; Riccardo Maiolini; Silvia Pulino

ABSTRACT Previous research suggests that the body of Social Innovation literature is increasing in terms of scholarly contributions. The field is described as phenomenally based and hypothetically fragmented, with a set of emerging theoretical contributions filling the gaps. This article explores the domain of Social Innovation identifying its principal characteristics through a taxonomy proposal.

Does Recurrence Matter? The Impact of Music Festivals on Local Tourist Competitiveness

Matteo Giuliano Caroli; Alfredo Valentino

Despite an increasing interest in recurrent events, we still lack a comprehensive view of their drivers and their consequences for the host location. This chapter seeks to redress this shortcoming by analysing the effects of recurrent events on national and international tourist flows and on the differentiation of demand targets at host locations. Through a qualitative approach based on six recurrent European music festivals we contribute to the growing literature and shed additional light on the effects of recurrent events. A theoretical framework is proposed to explain the impact of recurrent events on tourist flows and demand targets.

Family Firms and Foreign Market Entry Modes: The Role of Family Involvement

Matteo Giuliano Caroli; Marco Cucculelli; Claudia Pongelli

When family firms decide to internationalize, they show a peculiar behavior compared to non-family business and linked to the fact the firm is family owned and managed. Despite the growing and recent body of literature about this topic and the amount of contributions made so far, it is still not clear the question of what and to what extent the family character of a firm has an impact on internationalization. In order to contribute to this debate we investigate both theoretically and empirically the relation between family involvement in management and foreign market entry modes.
