This study is a review and evaluation of studies published in a Brazilian journal of management & production (G&P) from 1999 to 2010 in order to investigate the diversity of articles in terms of the purposes of research, data collection approaches, and data analysis techniques. The research articles were classified based on their primary purpose (theory building, application, and concepts), data collection approach (case study, qualitative research, archival research, survey-based research, laboratory research, and field research), data analysis technique (descriptive statistics, various multivariate statistical techniques, and mathematical modeling), and operations topics (strategy, quality, and supply chain management). The numbers of articles published increased substantially between 1999 to 2010. The focus of the articles on the manufacturing industry published in this journal changed considerably, and more recently the gap between the number of manufacturing and service-focused articles on production and operations management (POM) has reduced. While previous articles published in the G&P journal were based on conceptual descriptions, our results indicate that the journal has published articles based on theory and application. Case study is the most widely used method for data collection. Directions for future research in operations management were also discussed.

Reverse logistics has gained increasing importance among researchers and supply chain professionals not only for being one of the tools for sustainability, but also for its strategic role in many economic sectors. Several studies have shown how an efficient reverse logistics can reduce costs and provide competitive advantage to companies. Likewise, there has been a significant growth of electronic commerce in many countries, which has much higher return rates than those of traditional trade. Nevertheless, despite the importance of reverse logistics in electronic commerce, there are no studies addressing this topic in the literature. The aim of this paper is to describe the reverse logistics process of the largest online retailer in the Brazilian market by showing its development, analyzing its performance, and identifying its major deficiencies. Comercio eletronico.

This study aims to present the cross-cultural adaptation process of the constructs logistic service, satisfaction, and loyalty to the Brazilian culture. This adaptation process included the steps of translation, back translation, review by expert committee, pretesting, and analysis of validity and reliability. The study suggests that the constructs logistics service, satisfaction, and loyalty are reliable according to the Brazilian culture, but it was necessary to exclude 11 items from the list of 35 items identified in the theory. There is also evidence that the measures are valid as research instruments in Portuguese by the following methods: content analysis, convergent validity, discriminant validity, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis.

Purpose Shop floor control systems are generally major points of discussion in production planning and control literature. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how lean production control principles can be used in a make-to-order (MTO) job shop, where the volume is typically low and there is high variety. This paper examines the procedures involved in implementing a constant work-in-process (CONWIP)/Kanban hybrid system in the shop floor environment and also provides insights and guidelines on the implementation of a hybrid system in a high-variety/low-volume environment. Design/methodology/approach The authors review literature on Kanban, CONWIP, and CONWIP/Kanban hybrid systems to analyze how lean production control principles can be used in a MTO job shop. The second part focuses on the process of implementation. Using a case study of a manufacturer of electromechanical components for valve monitoring and controls, the paper describes how the operation is transformed by for more efficient shop floor control systems. Real experiments are used to compare pre- and post-improvement performance. Findings The study shows that the proposed hybrid Kanban-CONWIP system reduced the cycle time and achieved an increase of 38 percent in inventory turnover. The empirical results from this pilot study provide useful managerial insights for a benchmarking analysis of the actions to be taken into consideration by companies that have similar manufacturing systems. Research limitations/implications The statistic generalization of the results is impossible due to the use of a single case method of study. Originality/value This paper provides insights and guidelines on the implementation of a hybrid system in a high-variety/low-volume environment. The literature on real applications of hybrid CONWIP/Kanban by case study is limited.

Stockouts remain a significant problem for retail firms. Estimates of stockout rates in the past fifty years consistently averaged approximately 8 percent. The consequences of stockouts transcend the retail store to include its supporting supply chain. In addition to the effect on the behavior of consumers, stockouts can impact the firm’s replenishment policy, the level and location of inventories and the cost of emergency shipments required to replenish out-of-stock items. Although there is a substantive literature in logistics that measures the frequency of and the consumer response to stockouts, investigation of the effect of remedies on consumer response is sparse. To address this problem, the effectiveness of five remedies as tools to manage retail stockouts was investigated: apology, raincheck, home delivery, trade-up and discount. A remedy is an incentive to induce consumers to not leave a store in response to a stockout. In addition the influence of consumer characteristics (i.e., brand loyalty) and shopping situations (i.e., urgency of purchase) on the effect of each remedy on consumer behavior was examined. The results suggest that the remedies are usually effective. The most effective remedy is home delivery. The least effective remedy is a simple apology, which may actually increase the percentage of consumers leaving the store. The results also indicate that the urgency of the purchase and store loyalty have the most impact on remedy effectiveness. These results suggest that there are significant opportunities to use remedies as tools to manage the effect of stockouts on retail stores and their supporting supply chains.

ABSTRACT The returns management process is gaining increasing importance both in academia and among supply chain professionals, not only as a tool in the practice of sustainability, but also for its strategic role in many economic sectors. Several studies show how efficiently returns management can reduce costs and provide a competitive advantage to companies. Likewise, electronic commerce, or e-commerce, has shown significant growth in many countries and, due to its very nature, it presents much higher return rates than traditional trade. However, despite the importance of returns management operation for electronic commerce, few studies explore this theme in the literature. The aim of this paper is to describe the process of returns management of the largest online retailer of the Brazilian market, showing its evolution and analysing its performance, as well as identifying its main shortcomings. We conclude with suggestions for improvements and the implementation of a more efficient system.

Production control systems have been widely discussed in the Production Engineering literature. The KANBAN system is the most known among professionals for the control and processing of materials in the shop floor environment due to its simplicity and competitive significance in the design of the Toyota production system. Analyzing possible disadvantages presented by this system, the CONWIP demonstrates that the KANBAN can be questioned in certain circumstances and upon certain variables of the product, demand, or production. The objective of this research is to Investigate, compare, and point out the advantages and disadvantages of KANBAN, CONWIP, and the CONWIP/KANBAN Hybrid Method. Based on the case study in a company that manufactures electromechanical components for valve monitoring and control, characterized by small lots, high customization, and uncertain demand, these methods were discussed in order to show, through the results, the differential combination of KANBAN and CONWIP in the CONWIP/KANBAN Hybrid method.
