The metabolic status of 100 unselected cases of obesity was surveyed and compared with that of other groups selected from consecutive clinic cases according to their fat distribution, age and clinically apparent endocrinopathy.

It is essential to realize that the contemporary clinical concepts of metabolism are due for a thorough and fundamental revision; that the problem of obesity must be considered as the question of a symptom and not of a disease; and finally, that our increased knowledge of the complex hormonal-metabolic relationships contradicts the assumption that in obesity a single, all-important causal factor operates uniformly upon the individual members of a quite heterogeneous group of human beings.
