The influence of supradiaphragmatic splanchnicectomy on the heart in hypertension

Abstract This is a study of the cardiac aspects in 384 patients with arterial hypertension, treated surgically by the operation of bilateral supradiaphragmatic splanchnicectomy and lower dorsal sympathetic ganglionectomy. The findings suggest that this surgical treatment may have beneficially influenced the destiny of a significant percentage of hypertensive patients.

Summary A suspension of kaolin injected into the cerebello-medullary cistern of 9 dogs failed to produce a significant or sustained elevation of blood pressure, although considerable internal hydrocephalus was present in all autopsied dogs.

Abstract In consideration of the evidence that recurrences of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage are frequent, that mortality increases markedly with recurrence and that mortality is particularly great among those with an associated hypertension, a plan of management directed toward preventing death from recurrent episodes of hemorrhage in survivors of the primary attack has been presented.
