Abstract The large number of oak tree-ring site chronologies now available, covering the last millennium and beyond, make it possible to investigate the geographical relationships between sites from the degree of similarity between their ring-width series. However, it is only by studying living trees that these relationships can be evaluated unambiguously. While some examples of tree-ring series can be linked to relatively small geographical areas, generally their origins can only be located in regions some hundreds of kilometres across.

AbstractThe former door of the Pyx Chamber of Westminster Abbey has recently been identified as reused from the earlier abbey built by Edward the Confessor c. 1042–65. The dendrochronological investigation concluded that the door is the oldest scientifically dated door in Britain, and immediately sparked a controversial counter-claim that an early medieval door in Essex is in fact older. This short piece reviews the evidence and disposes of the Essex claim.
