Detection of Mechanical Imbalances of Induction Motors with Instantaneous Power Signature Analysis

Ahmet Küçüker; Mehmet Bayrak

Mechanical imbalances are common mechanical faults in induction motors. Vibration monitoring techniques have been widely used for the diagnosis of mechanical faults in induction motors, but electrical detection methods have been preferred in recent years. For many years, researchers have concentrated on the Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA). This paper examines the effect of mechanical imbalances to induction machine electrical parameters. Instantaneous Power Signature Analysis (IPSA) technique used to detect these faults. In the paper, a full analysis of the proposed technique is presented, and experimental results for healthy and faulty motors have been shown and discussed.

Load management of industrial facilities electrical system using intelligent supervision, control and monitoring systems

Selahattin Kucuk; Fahrettin Arslan; Mehmet Bayrak; Gustavo Contreras

The continuity of electrical energy is the main subject among all others affecting operational sustainability in industrial facilities. Therefore electrical system and its extensions shall be controlled, supervised, monitored and protected by intelligent systems. Hence, it is necessary to incorporate into electrical system required resources and hardware that will enhance the safety and sustainability of electrical energy by means of utilizing all available economical and technical means. In this regard; industrial facilities, along getting fed by national grid, install standalone production units too. However, electricity systems involving multiple energy production resources need to be run and controlled by smart systems that do not require technical manpower interference in order to comply with economical constraints, governing laws, regulations, etc. and be able to take prompt and correct decisions. Therefore, electricity systems should be enhanced with necessary prompt intelligent decision-maker and performer subsystems, which will continuously monitor, supervise, control and record electrical system and extensions and ensure system sustainability in case of occurrence significant change in the whole system. This article aims to illustrate all required smart systems that ensure sustainability and safety of electrical energy, complying with governing laws and regulations and an application regarding supporting systems in an industrial facility.

Restarting scheme of electrical motors after supply voltage outages in heavily loaded industrial facilities

Selahattin Kucuk; Luis Fernandez Fernandez; Mehmet Bayrak; Ahmet Serdar Yilmaz

A primary goal of an industrial electric power system is to minimize production losses in industrial facilities maintaining the industrial process running after the occurrence of certain supply disturbances. The automatic motor restarting is one of the strategies used in the industrial facilities, especially in Oil and Gas facilities, in order to achieve this goal. Aim of this strategy is to allow that after a voltage dip or disturbance, the medium voltage and low voltage motors will be automatically reenergized within predetermined time and in a certain order when voltage is restored. These abnormal voltage conditions may be caused by cleared short-circuits upstream, generation and public supply voltage outages or a simple automatic transfer system of a selective secondary substation operation. This paper presents the automatic motor restarting scheme applied at a large oil refinery where more than 600 motors are assigned to automatic restarting. Application criteria for motor restarting, power system simulations and physical implementation of this scheme are discussed in this paper.
