SummaryIn this report, European common toads; Bufo bufo, European green toads Bufo viridis and marsh frogs Rana ridibunda were collected in Amasya, Çorum, and Tokat Provinces (Middle Black Sea Region of Turkey) 2005 and 2006 and examined for helminths. Two of 2 (100 %) Bufo bufo and 8 of 8 (100 %) Bufo viridis and 57 of 63 (90.5 %) Rana ridibunda were infected with 1 or more helminths. The helminths of B. bufo included Oswaldocruzia filiformis and Oxysomatium brevicaudatum. The helminth fauna of B. viridis comprised 5 species: 1 species of trematode (Pleurogenoides medians), 1 species of cestode (Nematotaenia dispar) and 3 species of nematodes, (Oswaldocruzia filiformis, Cosmocerca ornata, and Oxysomatium brevicaudatum), while the helminth fauna of Rana ridibunda comprised 9 species: 4 species of trematodes (Gorgodera cygnoides, Gorgoderina vitelliloba, Haematoloechus breviansa, and Opisthioglyphe ranae), 3 species of nematodes Oswaldocruzia filiformis, Cosmocerca ornata, and Oxysomatium brevicaudatum), and 2 species of acanthocephalans (Pomphorhynchus laevis and Acanthocephalus ranae). Oswaldocruzia filiformis, Cosmocerca ornata, and Oxysomatium brevicaudatum were collected from all three host species. In addition, Pleurogenoides medians represents a new host record for Bufo viridis in Turkey.

SummaryThe fish acanthocephalan fauna of Turkish waters is poorly known. In this study 8 fish species (Merluccius merluccius, Trachurus trachurus, Uranoscopus scaber, Gobius niger, G. cobitis, Scorpaena scrofa, Eutrigla gurnardus, Solea vulgaris) were collected from Gemlik Bay and examined for their acanthocephalan fauna. Four species not previously recorded in fish of Turkish waters were found: Solearhynchus soleae (Echinorhynchidae), Acanthhocephaloides propinquus, Paracanthocephaloides kostylewi (Arhythmacanthidae), and Longicollum pagrosomi (Pomphorhynchidae). The most common species was A. propinquus, a parasite that infects mostly gobiids (G. niger, G. cobitis). Longicollum pagrosomi was a new record for the Mediterranean basin.

SummaryMetazoan parasite communities of two gobiids, Proterorhinus marmoratus and P. semilunaris, which are common small-sized fishes native for the Black Sea basin, were studied. The parasite component community of P. marmoratus is represented by 11 species (one monogenean, one cestode, five digeneans, two nematodes, and two acanthocephalans). P. semilunaris had 5 species (one monogenean, one cestode, one digenean, one nematode, and one acanthocephalan). Acanthocephaloides propinquus has a great tendency to join the infracommunity. The differences between the parasite component communities of two Proterorhinus gobies are explained by different quality of habitats and available intermediate hosts. The component community of parasites of P. marmoratus is formed by brackish-water and marine parasite species, and that of P. semilunaris consists of limnetic parasite species. The euryhaline G. proterorhini is the only parasite species found in both P. marmoratus and P. semilunaris. In both species of gobiids, the main abundant parasite species (A. propinquus in P. marmoratus and Nicolla skrjabini in P. semilunaris) infest the host by feeding on crustaceans.

To date, there have been nearly 100 papers published on metazoan parasites of Antarctic fishes, but there has not yet been any compilation of a species list of fish parasites for this large geographic area. Herein, we provide a list of all documented occurrences of monogenean, cestode, digenean, acanthocephalan, nematode, and hirudinean parasites of Antarctic fishes. The list includes nearly 250 parasite species found in 142 species of host fishes. It is likely that there are more species of fish parasites, which are yet to be documented from Antarctic waters.

Acanthocephaloides irregularis n. sp. (Arhythmacanthidae) is described from four species of marine fishes in the Gulf of Odessa and Sukhyi Lyman, Ukrainan Black Sea waters, making it the tenth species of the genus. The hosts are the combtooth blenny Parablennius zvonimiri (Kolombatovic) (Blenniidae), the mushroom goby Ponticola eurycephalus (Kessler) (Gobiidae), the tubenose goby Proterorhinus marmoratus (Pallas) (Gobiidae) and the black-striped pipefish Syngnathus abaster Risso (Syngnathidae). The new species is most similar to its closest relative, Acanthocephaloides propinquus (Dujardin, 1845), in proboscis shape and armature (12 longitudinal rows of 5 hooks) and the shape of the trunk, reproductive system and lemnisci, but differs in having randomly distributed trunk spines. These trunk spines are organised in circular rings of individual spines separated by aspinose zones. The new species is also unique in having an anterior trunk collar, a very large triangular cephalic ganglion, nucleated pouches at the posterior end of the proboscis receptacle, and hooks and spines with roots bearing anterior manubria. Valid and invalid species of Acanthocephaloides Meyer, 1932 are listed and a key to all ten species is included.

OBJECTIVE Some information is available about the parasite fauna and incidence for Clarias gariepinus in Turkey, but digenean parasites have received little attention. The purpose of the study is to contribute to the parasite fauna of Turkey. METHODS From 2007 to 2008, a total 63 Clarias gariepinus that were caught in the Asi River were purchased from the fish market in Hatay and brought on ice to the Parasitology Research Laboratory at Atatürk University. The fish were dissected. The obtained parasites were fixed with AFA, dyed with Mayers Carmalum, and mounted with Canada Balsam. RESULTS Forty-eight fish were infected with the Orientocreadium batrachoides. The prevalence of the parasite was 76.2% overall, and 100% in the largest size class of C. gariepinus. There was no significant correlation between fish size and number of parasites. CONCLUSION Our sample of C. gariepinus from the Asi River exhibited high rates of incidence of O. batrachoides which is the first record from Turkey. It was detected that the specimens of O. batrachoides in Turkey are larger than previously reported samples. This is the first clearly documented report of O. batrachoides in teleost fish of Turkey.
