Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study consisted of 28 amenorrheic women with PCOS and 11 amenorrheic women without PCOS. Fifteen healthy women with normal ovulatory function, matched for age and body mass index (BMI), served as controls. BMD was measured at the lumbar spine and left femoral neck with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Blood samples were obtained to measure serum levels of insulin, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), total and free testosterone, androstenedione and estradiol by radioimmunassay. Insulin resistance was estimated by the insulin tolerance test (ITT), and KITT was taken as the insulin sensitivity index. In the PCOS group, KITT was significantly lower and insulin levels were higher than in either of the control groups (P < 0.001). BMD in the PCOS group was lower than in the healthy group and higher than in the amenorrheic control group (P < 0.05). In the PCOS group, there were positive correlations of BMD of the lumbar spine with insulin (r = 0.42; P < 0.05) and negative correlations of BMD with KITT (r = −0.58; P < 0.001) and SHBG (r = −0.38; P < 0.05). The inverse association of BMD and KITT was independent of BMI, insulin, SHBG, androstenedione, and free testosterone. In conclusion, insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia in women with PCOS may be a relative protective factor against bone mineral loss.

Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of routine hematological parameters on the development and prognosis of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss in patients applying to our clinic. Study design:A retrospective clinical study. SettingOne academic health center from 2008 to 2014. Patients and intervention:One hundred forty patients with sudden hearing loss and 132 healthy controls were included in the present study. Results:Patients having idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss were divided into 2 subgroups based on whether they recovered (complete, partial, and slight recovery) (Group 1; n = 83, 59.3%) or not (Group 2; n = 57, 40.7%) during the follow-up term. Group 1, Group 2, and the controls differed statistically significantly in terms of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (P = 0.001), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (P = 0.001), lymphocytes % (P = 0.001), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (P = 0.019), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (P = 0.015), platelet (P = 0.001), mean platelet volume (P = 0.001), platelet distribution width (P = 0.009), and glucose (P = 0.001). The study groups and the controls did not have any significant difference in terms of other laboratory parameters affecting the prognosis of Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Conclusions:The results the authors obtained showed that laboratory parameters such as lymphocyte, lymphocyte%, platelet, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration may be indicative for prognosis and treatment success in groups of patients suffering idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss in whose etiology many factors play a role.

In spite of a constantly-increasing requirement for blood transfusion in the world, blood donation does not exhibit an increase at the same rate. In Turkey with a population of 74 million, only 15 per 10,000 people donate blood regularly and rate of voluntary blood donation is very low compared to developed countries. The aim of this study is to determine empathic level of donors and anxiety levels of blood and platelet donors and also to enable comfort and motivation of donors by taking precautions for reducing their anxieties. This prospective and descriptive study was conducted with 100 voluntary donors (50 blood donors, 50 platelet donors) who admitted to Blood Centre of Cumhuriyet University Hospital between 15 March 2012 and 30 April 2012. Average age of these donors was 27 (19-48)years. The mean scores of donors from Empathic Tendency Scale (ETS), State Anxiety Invertory (SAI) and Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI) were 70 (49-83), 40 (33-45) and 34 (30-44), respectively. ETS score of those donating blood/platelet for the first time was low, >1 is higher in those who donated previously. SAI and TAI scores of blood donors were higher than those of platelet donors (p<0.001) and TAI score was higher in those who donate for the first time (p<0.007) compared to previously donated precipitants. In conclusion, this study underscores that the request of the donor to help others is the most important factor for donation. People frequently donate blood to unfamiliar people and recurring blood donations increase the level of empathy. Donation made during the continuous disclosure is an important factor for being a donor.

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis is termed as a group of diseases that leads to have same histopathology, but different clinical symptoms. The disease has 3 distinct forms and the localized form is termed as Eosinophilic granuloma . Eosinophilic granuloma is the localized form of which has the least clinical severity and the most favourable subtype in Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis group. The treatment options are available as surgery removal, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy alone or in combinations. In this paper, a young adult patient was represented who referred to our clinic with complaints of swelling and pain on right occipital region, and who diagnosed as Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (Eosinophilic granuloma) after evaluation of radiologic tests and histopathologic survey.
