Implementation and Effectiveness of GIS-Based Projects in Secondary Schools

This study aims to provide an understanding of the main obstacles to conducting GIS-based projects in secondary schools and to determine the effects of these projects on students, teachers, and schools. The study was conducted in three public high schools in Turkey. The students first surveyed over 4,015 people in their school districts to understand the main social, environ- mental, and economic problems in their area, then conducted nine different GIS-based projects to help design solutions to these problems. As seen in the study, GIS is a very important teaching and learning tool for secondary schools; however, its effective use depends on planning, motivation, support, resources, time, and enthusiasm, especially for teachers.

Askeri lisexa0genel cografya dersinin, sivil liselerden farkli olarak, askeri cografya vexa0topografya dersleriyle iliskilendirilerek islenmesine duyulan ihtiyacin tespiti vexa0bu dogrultuda olusturulabilecek yardimci bir kaynagi iceriginin belirlenmesixa0gereklidir. Soz konusu ihtiyacin tespiti icin yapilan on arastirmada askeri lisexa0ogrencileri ve Kara Harp Okulu mezunu subaylarla yapilan sozlu mulakatlardaxa0sorulara alinan yanitlar degerlendirilmis ve bu tarz bir arastirmaninxa0gerekliligine karar verilmistir. ABSTRAC The curriculum of Geography course in military high schools is prepared in parallel to the curriculum determined by the Ministry of Education.xa0Apart from the general geography course in other high schools, it is necessaryxa0to determine the need to do geography lessons in military high schools by linking them with military geography and topography courses and to determinexa0the contents of a supporting course book which might be compiled in thisxa0direction. In a pilot study to determine the requirements, the results of thexa0interviews with cadets and Army Academy graduates have been assessed and itxa0has been decided that such a survey was needed. OZET Haritanin sozluk anlami; Cografya, tarih, dil, nufus vb. olgularla ilgili yuzunun yada bir parcasinin, belli bir orana gore kucultulerek duzlem uzerine cizilen taslagi olarak ifade edilir. Cografi anlamda harita ise; (Almanca:Karte, Landkarte, Fransizca: 1e, Ingilizce: Map) Yeryuzunun bir bolumunun alinan olcege gore bir lem uzerinde cizilmis durumudur. Harita uzerinde dogal ve beseri olgulari tanitmak, bunlari aciklamaya calismak icin haritadan faydalanmaya harita umak denir. Harita okuma, Cografya Egitiminde oldukca onemlidir. E. C. Bentley; Cografya, haritalar hakkindadir, Ama Biografi adamlar hakkindadir. demektedir. Gercekten de oyledir. Okullarda ogretilen cografya bilgilerinin haritalar uzerinde gosterilmesi adeta zorunlu bir hal almistir. Bu edenle, haritalara Cografyanin aletleri denmektedir. Cografyanin aletleri olan haritalari tam anlamiyla kullanmak, cografya biliminin ogretilmesinde onemli bir asamadir. Cografyada haritasiz bir anlatim, ogrencilerin konulari anlamakta gucluk cekmelerine yol acmakta ve ezbercilige yoneltmektedir. Bu nedenle haritalar, cografya konularinin anlayarak ogrenilmesinde buyuk rol oynamaktadirlar. Cograffâ egitimi ve ogretiminde, birinci derecede rol oynayan haritalarin okunmasi kadar hazirlanmasi da onemlidir. Haritalar ne kadar iyi hazirlanmissa, cografya o kadar iyi aciklanir. Haritalar ne kadar dogru kullanilirsa, cografya o kadar iyi anlasilir. Bu bildiride, haritalarin hazirlanmasi, cesitleri, kullanilmasi arastirilacak ve Cografya Egitimi ve Ogretiminde haritalarin onemi ortaya konmaya calisilacaktir. ABSTRACT The dictionary meaning of the map; it is explained as the sketch of a part or whole of the surface, drawn on a plane by reducing it according to a certain ratio, related with the phenomenons such as geography, history, language, population ete. The Geographical meaning of the map; (German: Karte, Landkarte, French: Carte, English: Map) It is the a part of the surface dravm on a plane according to a taken ratio. To show the natural and human phenomenons and making use ofthem to explain these is called mad reading. Map reading is very important in Geography Education. E.C. Bertley says that: Geography is about maps, But the Biography is about chaps It is in fact true. It has been almost a must to show the geographical knowledge thought in the schools, on maps. For this reason, maps are called Tools of Geography. It is a very important rank in teaching geography selence to use the maps, which are tools of geography perfectly. Teaching without maps, students can not understand the subjects easily andforce them to memorisation. For this reason, maps play a big role in learning the geography subjects perfectly. Preparation of the maps are also important besides reading them, which plays a first degree role in geography education and instruetion. The explanation of geography is relatfd with the preparation of the maps. And geography can be understood of the maps. And geography can be understood well ifthe maps are used correctly. In this announcement, besides putting fonvard the importance of maps in geography education, preparation of maps, their types and their way of use should be researehed.
