Use of information visualization techniques in a collaborative context

Fernanda C. Ribeiro; Jano Moreira de Souza; Melise Maria Veiga de Paula

Collaborative visualization is a study field that emerged by combining computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) and information visualization. The main goal is to analyze how visualization techniques can be used to support collaboration. One of the key aspects for the effective use of visual representations as a facilitator for collaboration is the analysis of how this feature influences collaborative work The aim of this paper is to present a study which considered the use of visualization techniques for supporting the collaboration process from a 3C collaboration model perspective. More specifically, we analyzed the influence of techniques from the users perspective. A case study was conducted to investigate the relationship of visualization techniques with activities performed by users in a software development scenario. The results of the case study show that visualization techniques influence collaborative tasks.

Performance evaluation of NoSQL data store for digital media

Jonathan de Oliveira Assis; Vanessa Cristina Oliveira de Souza; Melise Maria Veiga de Paula; Joao Bosco S Cunha

With the increasing use of social networks, the storage and retrieval of videos and images has been the object of attention when it comes to performance. This study aims to evaluate the performance of NoSQL databases in transactions involving digital media and in the simulation of a social network, comparing results with a relational database. The results showing that the NoSQL databases are more efficient than relational databases in applications involving digital media.

An exploratory analysis about requirements of serious games for learning support

Bárbara Marques; Melise Maria Veiga de Paula

Games development can be considered a constantly evolving area that requires a considerable effort by the developers to create elements that capture the players attention. Researches indicate that games can produce a high engagement, which indicate their potential as tools for education, training or awareness. Games designed with a primary purpose other than entertaining, such as the applications mentioned, are known as serious games. For the design of a serious game it is necessary, among other matters, to define the requirements that will be in the game, adapting the motivational resources of the games and the learning goals in a coherent way. In this paper are presented the results of an exploratory analysis on the subject through an opinion survey whose objective was to investigate the interest of potential players in different aspects of games and the use of serious games. The results indicate functional and nonfunctional requirements that can provide more effectiveness in the application of games as a tool to support learning. The results also exhibited how the serious games are being used and the degree of players satisfaction with this situation.

WeCollaborate: Citizen collaboration for government problem-solving

Bárbara P. Caetano; Carlos Eduardo Barbosa; Melise Maria Veiga de Paula; Jano Moreira de Souza

The advance of technology has influenced the relationship between government and citizen. In this scenario, the convergence between digital democracy, crowd computing, information visualization, mining of social media and collaborative information systems can increase citizen participation in solution for social problems. The aim of this paper is to propose an application that provides a collaborative environment and allows citizens to help with the solutions of social problems. Expect that the application encourage the participation increase of citizens in decision-making of public sector. In proposal is described some features and the basic application architecture. Furthermore, in order to facilitate understanding was generated a prototype and a conceptual model of the application.

A proposal for visualization techniques recommendation to represent survey data

Bárbara P. Caetano; Fernanda C. Ribeiro; Melise Maria Veiga de Paula; Adriana Prest Mattedi

Survey is a scientific method used for analysis of various phenomena. The advancement of technology, which automates and simplifies data collection, significantly increases the number of possibilities for implementing such method. The Information Visualization (InfoVis) techniques can improve the analysis of such data by facilitating the results representation and interpretation. Given the wide variety of visualization techniques, it is necessary a study to assist in choosing the most appropriate technique to represent certain data. The aim of this paper is to present a set of rules designed to visualization techniques recommendation to represent the data coming from research carried out by applying the survey method. This set of rules was validated through an experiment with end users. The results showed that the set of rules promote the better choice of data representation techniques systematically according to well-defined criteria directly related to the context considered.

NK-Sim: A Negotiation Simulator

W-NEG: A WORKFLOW NEGOTIATION SYSTEM

Melise Maria Veiga de Paula; Danilo Braga de Lima; Luis Theodoro Oliveira Camargo; Sérgio Assis Rodrigues; Jano Moreira de Souza

It has been claimed that there are different methods for solving conflict; however, the main one is to solve conflicts through negotiations. This paper addresses one of the Negotiation Support Systems developed, namely NK-Sys and a workflow approach titled W-Neg. Negotiators often attempt to resolve their conflict through the use of intrinsic activities and their own skills. In W-Neg, we suggest a set of workflow models to tackle issues that may be conflicting during the negotiation table. As any decision-making process, negotiations arise from some well known steps. Therefore, the management of activities realized from these steps can be considered an alternative to improve negotiator’s preparation. In this proposal, workflow’s technology is aligned with this alternative once the main goal of workflow systems is to provide better business processes management.

Uma análise da negociação de uma perspectiva tecnológica

Melise Maria Veiga de Paula; Jano Moreira de Souza

Todayx92s economy sets a scenario where it is indispensable to establish agreements, partnerships and alliances, where constant negotiation is necessary. Contrary to past times, when communication was done on a face-to-face basis, today we are faced with a new context where people increasingly interact with the support of technology. This fact has influenced the way social relations are studied and negotiation is one form of social relation that has been influenced by these changes. Even though there is a worldly trend towards the adoption of systems to support negotiation, there still exist some doubts about the benefits of technology in this process. Thus, the essence of this article is an analysis of the main aspects that surround the negotiation, identifying different mechanisms to support this process in an efficient way by using technological devices.
