DSP-based sliding mode speed control of induction motor using neuro-genetic structure

Metin Demirtas

In this paper, a novel approach is presented for optimization of sliding mode controller parameters. The main purpose is to optimize sliding surface slope and thickness of the boundary layer. The tuning of the electrical drive controller is a complex problem due to the many non-linearities of the machines, power converter and controller. Therefore, it is difficult to develop mathematical models of the system accurately because of unknown and unavoidable parameter variations due to saturation temperature variations and system disturbance. To solve that problem artificial neural network (ANN) is used. That is, the whole system is modeled by using ANN. Then, sliding surface slope and thickness of the boundary layer is optimized using genetic algorithms. The proposed method is applied to an induction motor. Experimental results verify that the proposed control approach is very good for complex and non-linear systems.

Position control of induction motor a new‐bounded fuzzy sliding mode controller

Ibrahim Senol; Metin Demirtas; Sabir Rustemov; Bilal Gumus

Purpose – The aims of the paper are to improve the dynamic response of an induction motor based position servo system and to remove the chattering problem in the sliding mode control theory by using fuzzy logic principles. The obtained results are also compared with conventional sliding mode controller to show its performance.Design/methodology/approach – The main method used for the research is to form a thin boundary layer neighboring the switching surface by using fuzzy logic. The sliding mode control law is inherently discontinuous naturally. Therefore, there are some difficulties such as so many switches occurring between the control bounds, which cannot be carried out by real controllers. Therefore, fuzzy logic is used in the thin boundary layer to determine the control signal current. Thus, the chattering is eliminated.Findings – The results show that the designed controller has superior performance. But, there are also some difficulties. It is difficult to obtain fuzzy rules. The rules can be obta...

Virtual laboratory for sliding mode and PID control of rotary inverted pendulum

Metin Demirtas; Yusuf Altun; Ayhan Istanbullu

This paper presents a new virtual laboratory tool which teaches sliding mode control (SMC) and proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control to graduate students. Additionally, it describes performance differences between two control methods graphically. This educational virtual laboratory tool contains the control of rotary inverted pendulum. This system is a typical example of nonlinear and under‐actuated systems and also well‐known in control engineering for practicing different control theories. At first, the nonlinear dynamic equations of the inverted pendulum are presented. Then a virtual laboratory tool is designed for SMC and PID. After that, the results are analyzed. The validity of designed tool is verified by an experiment.

An educational virtual laboratory for sliding mode and PID control of inverted pendulum

Metin Demirtas; Yusuf Altun; Ayhan Istanbullu

This paper presents a new tool which teaches sliding mode control (SMC) and proportional-integral- derivative (PID) control to undergraduate and graduate students without laboratory. This educational virtual laboratory tool contains the control of inverted pendulum on the cart. This system is typical example of nonlinear and under-actuated systems. This system is also well known in control engineering for practice of various control theories. At first, the nonlinear dynamic equations of the inverted pendulum are obtained. Then a virtual laboratory tool is designed for SMC and PID. After that the simulation results are analyzed.

The first year curriculums of electrical-electronics engineering departments in Turkey

Yusuf Altun; Metin Demirtas; Ayhan Istanbullu

In this study, we consider evaluation of the first year undergraduate curriculums of electrical-electronics engineering departments at the state universities in Turkey (TR). The first year education is very significant, in view of the students vocational information. Therefore, the first year curriculums are explained at thirty state universities. Analyzing the curriculums, the situation of electrical-electronics engineering departments is represented. According to analyze, we propose lessons of the first year curriculum.
