Abstract Luminescence lifetimes and photoaquation quantum yields of RhA 5 X 2+ (A = NH 3 or ND 3 , X − = Cl − or Br − ) measured in aqueous solution indicate that emission and aquation are competitive processes of the same ligand field excited state. Lifetimes are 10–30 ns with the longer lived perdeuterio complexes also displaying larger photoreaction quantum yields.

It is demonstrated that the identity of the ligand labilized from the ligand field excited states of [Rh(NH3)5Cl]2+ is a function of the solvent medium, with Cl– substitution predominating in water and formamide solutions but NH3 substitution predominating in dimethylformamide, methanol, and dimethyl sulphoxide solutions.
