The Mantid framework is a software solution developed for the analysis and visualization of neutron scattering and muon spin measurements. The framework is jointly developed by software engineers and scientists at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The objectives, functionality and novel design aspects of Mantid are described.

Large-scale computation-intensive applications in various science fields feature complex DAG-structured workflows comprised of distributed computing modules with intricate inter-module dependencies. Supporting such workflows in heterogeneous network environments and optimizing their end-to-end performance are crucial to the success of large-scale collaborative scientific applications. We design and develop a generic Scientific Workflow Automation and Management Platform (SWAMP), which contains a set of easy-to-use computing and networking toolkits for application scientists to conveniently assemble, execute, monitor, and control complex computing workflows in distributed network environments. The current version of SWAMP integrates the graphical user interface of Kepler to compose abstract workflows and employs Condor DAGMan for workflow dispatch and execution. SWAMP provides a web-based user interface to automate and manage workflow executions and uses a special workflow mapper to optimize the end-to-end workflow performance. A case study of the workflow for Spallation Neutron Source datasets in real networks is presented to show the efficacy of the proposed platform.

Web portals are one of the possible ways to access the remote computing resources offered by Grid environments. Since the emergence of the first middleware for the Grid, works have been conducted on delivering the functionality of Grid services on the Web. Many interesting Grid portal solutions have been designed help organize remote access to Grid resources and applications from within Web browsers. They are technically advanced and more and more widely used around the world, resulting in feedback from the community. Some of these user comments concern the flexibility and user-friendliness of the developed solutions. In this paper we present how we addressed the need for a flexible and user-friendly Grid portal environment within the PROGRESS project and how our approach facilitates the use of the Grid within Web portals. Supporting large-scale scientific workflows in distributed network environments and optimizing their performances are crucial to the success of collaborative scientific discovery. We develop a generic scientific workflow platform, referred to as SciFlow, which constitutes a flexible framework to facilitate the distributed execution and management of scientific workflows and incorporates a class of workflow mapping schemes to achieve optimal end-to-end performances. The functionalities of SciFlow are provided and its interactions with other tools or systems are enabled through web services for easy access over standard Internet protocols while being independent of different platforms and programming languages. The performance superiority of SciFlow over existing workflow mapping schemes and management systems is illustrated by extensive simulations and is further verified by large-scale experiments on real-life scientific workflows through effective system implementation and deployment in distributed network environments.
