Adenosine: cellular mechanisms, pathophysiological roles and clinical applications

In a recent review in the Journal [l], we discussed the relevance of advances in receptor pharmacology to the practice of clinical cardiology, including discussion of the present state of understanding of adenosine receptors. In this article we review the possible roles of adenosine (an endogenous purine nucleoside) in the pathophysiology and treatment of human disease, with particular emphasis on the cardiovascular system.
