Epidemic hepatitis B with delta-antigenaemia among Dublin drug-abusers.

A. G. Shattock; Michael G Kelly; J. Fielding; Yvonne Arthurs

SummaryONE hundred and fifty-eight cases of hepatitis have been detected among Dublin drug-abusers from January to August 1981 during an epidemic which originated in 1980 and still continues. The mean age was 21 years and the male/female susceptibility to hepatitis was the same. An unusually high proportion (29%) of a sample of 50 tested had the hepatitis associated delta antigen in their serum and confirms that the delta agent is probably common in drug addicts and not confined to Italy.

DELTA INFECTION WITHOUT INCREASE IN SEVERITY OF HEPATITIS

Alan Gaylard Shattock; Jf Fielding; Yvonne Arthurs; Gerardine Doyle; Michael G Kelly

The findings of increased morbidity of HbsAG positive hepatitis with delta infection in a study by Dr. Smedile et al were contrary to those of studies performed by the authors. A group of 27 and a group of 41 drug abusers were examined serologically and had liver biopsies performed. There was no significant difference in histological findings between delta positive and delta negative patients in the 27 member group. None of the 41 member group showed any increase in severity of illness. Ethnic origin may be an important factor in the pathogenicity of the delta agent.

The normal personality profile of irritable bowel syndrome patients

W. A. Ryan; Michael G Kelly; Jf Fielding

SummaryIRRITABLE bowel syndrome sufferers have a normal premorbid personality profile. Site or sites of major symptomatology is independent of premorbid personality and such personality does not influence short term prognosis. Previous studies showing increased anxiety levels in irritable bowel syndrome patients were based on post morbid personality assessments.
