The recent introduction of the LogicPD Zoom™ OMAP-L138 eXperimenter Kit, featuring Texas Instruments dual core SoC (ARM9 and a C6748 VLIW DSP) has brought a much more capable and affordable DSP development system to both university and industry engineers. While this new experimenter kit has several improvements over the TMS320C6713 DSK, the host computer-to-experimenter kit communication techniques have changed dramatically. This paper discusses the continuing evolution of the winDSK software program that was necessary to support this new system. Specifically, winDSK8 was developed to support the C6748 DSP core within the OMAP-L138 SoC using the ARM9 core as the systems communication interface.

A new multi-core DSP board is available for university and industry engineers. The LogicPD Zoom™ OMAP-L138 eXperimenter Kit, featuring Texas Instruments dual core SoC (ARM9 and a C6748 VLIW DSP) provides a much more capable and affordable development system for real-time DSP. While this new board includes several improvements over the TMS320C6713 DSK, the host computer-to-board communication methods have changed dramatically. This paper discusses how the latest incarnation of the winDSK software program supports this new system. Specifically, winDSK8 was developed to support the C6748 DSP core within the OMAP-L138 SoC using the ARM9 core as the systems communication interface.

Students with limited exposure to discrete-time systems and possessing only basic C/C* programming skills can successfully complete laboratory exercises involving realtime digital signal processing @SP) hardware, despite having never completed a DSP course. The laboratory exercises discussed in this paper were part of a coordinated effort to expose all junior year Electrical Engineering @E) students at the US. Naval Academy to real-time DSP hardware.
