A Prototype Intelligent Environment

Michael H. Coen

This paper presents our laboratorys Intelligent Room, an experimental environment for bringing computation into the realm of ordinary, everyday activity and enabling natural human-computer interaction. We first present the notion of an Intelligent Environment and describe how it differs from other paradigms in human-computer interaction. We then discuss our Intelligent Rooms hardware and software components and one of the rooms current applications. We also outline criteria for designing and evaluating highly interactive spaces.
