Basierend auf erfolgreichen Mustern in anderen Industrien lasst sich die eigene Geschaftslogik revolutionieren. Uber 90 Prozent aller Geschaftsmodellinnovationen sind Rekombinationen aus 55 Geschaftsmodellmustern. In diesem Werk werden diese Muster praxisorientiert vorgestellt und konkret gezeigt, wie sich mithilfe des praxisbewahrten St. Galler Business Model Navigators innovative Geschaftsmodelle identifizieren und entwickeln lassen. Eine Landkarte aller Geschaftsmodelle liefert einen guten Uberblick und erlaubt die Einordnung der eigenen Industrie.

Business model innovation has received rising attention as a means for firms to achieve superior performance. Yet, as we argue based on a review of related literature, the research field so far lacks a comprehensive framework that supports managers in their endeavour to innovative their firms’ business models. Based on process models from innovation management literature and insights from 14 cases of past business model innovations, we develop the 4Iframework that structures the business model innovation process and highlights the specific challenges which managers face during the initiation, ideation, integration and implementation of new business models. Through our study, we also provide a conceptual framework to organise existing literature in the business model innovation field and identify promising areas for future research.

In the future, the race for comparative competitive advantages will take place between business models, and not just between products, services, and technologies. Considering that a firm’s business model is a complex system characterized by interdependencies and secondary effects, it can be assumed there are many barriers that prevent companies from developing a new business model and moving into a ‘blue ocean’. The Business Model Innovation Map provides a process for business model innovation structured in three steps. After one’s starting point has been defined by describing the current business model as a first step, the next step is the process of ideation with the help of various tools, such as the business pattern cards. These contain 55 main patterns of business models to encourage outside-the-box thinking and help to start analyzing how existing patterns of business models could be adapted to one’s own particular situation. A set of checklists and tools ease the third step of quickly developing the business model around a promising idea and integrating it successfully.

Geschaftsmodellinnovationen spielen heutzutage eine unbestrittene Rolle fur den langfristigen Erfolg von Unternehmen. Ansatze und Methoden, die Unternehmen gezielt bei der aktiven Bewaltigung dieser Herausforderung unterstutzen konnen, sind allerdings kaum vorhanden. Wir haben im Rahmen mehrerer Praxisprojekte ein strukturiertes Vorgehen zur systematischen Identifikation und Entwicklung innovativer Geschaftsmodelle entwickelt. Kern unseres Vorgehens ist das Uberwinden der dominanten Branchenlogik durch die Adaption von Geschaftsmodellmustern.
