Conversion of a Signal Wavelength in a Dynamically Tuned Resonator

Stefan F. Preble; Michal Lipson

We show that the wavelength of light confined in a resonator can be controlled with a linear change of the refractive index in a time shorter than the cavity lifetime.

Tunable electro-optic modulator on silicon-on-insulator substrates using ring resonators

Sameer Pradhan; Vilson R. Almeida; Carlos Angulo Barrios; Michal Lipson

We study a compact electro-optic modulator using high-index contrast silicon ring resonators on silicon-on-insulator substrate. Optical modulation is achieved using the plasma dispersion effect due to current injection under forward bias of a p-i-n junction.

Optical Transmission in Horizontal Slot Waveguides

Rong Sun; Po Dong; Ning-Ning Feng; Ching-yin Hong; Michal Lipson; Jurgen Michel; Lionel C. Kimerling

Horizontal single and multiple slot waveguides and ring resonators consisting of deposited amorphous silicon and silicon dioxide are demonstrated. Their waveguide propagation loss, optical confinement, and thermo-optic effects are studied.

Sub-Wavelength Mode Volumes in Silicon Optical Nanocavities

Jacob T. Robinson; Stefan F. Preble; Michal Lipson

We demonstrate a reduction of effective mode volume to the order of 0.01 (?/2n)3 using dielectric discontinuities that enhance the local electric field in Silicon optical nanocavities.

Novel Structures for High Confinement in Sub-Wavelength Regions

Michal Lipson; Jacob T. Robinson; Qianfan Xu; Vilson R. Almeida; Hod Lipson

We show high confinement in novel index nm-size waveguides and cavities. Enhancement of light by a few orders of magnitude relative to the input light is observed.

Optical bistability on silicon microphotonics

Vilson R. Almeida; Michal Lipson

We demonstrate optical bistability on a silicon-based integrated optical device. Hysteresis curves and modulation measurements show bistable modulation depth of 10 dB and sub-microsecond time response.

Low power compact silicon electro-optic modulator

Carlos Angulo Barrios; Vilson R. Almeida; Roberto R. Panepucci; Bradley Schmidt; Michal Lipson

We propose a micron-size planar waveguide silicon electro-optic modulator based on a Fabry-Perot cavity. Both optical and carrier confinement into the cavity region lead to very low dc power consumption for modulation.
