Aspects of text processing important for the scientific community are discussed, and an overview of currently available software is presented. Progress on standardization efforts in the area of document exchange (SGML), document formatting (DSSSL), document presentation (SPDL), fonts (ISO 9541) and character codes (Unicode and ISO 10646) is described. An elementary particle naming scheme for use with LATEX and SGML is proposed. LATEX, PostScript, SGML and desk-top publishing allow electronic submission of articles to publishers, and printing on demand. Advantages of standardization are illustrated by the description of a system which can exchange documents between different word processors and automatically extract bibliographic data for a library database.

CERN daily handles a large number of research documents, mostly marked up in LATEX and coming from many Internet servers. Our aim is to make them easily locatable on the Web with the help of the CERN Librarys Preprint Catalogue in several formats (PostScript, pdf, gif). We review the conversion procedures and give some details on some massive production trial runs to directly generate html from the TEX sources. We conclude with a discussion of recent developments in the framework of the xml (and mml) e orts which should ease the support of mathematics formulae in Web browsers. This documentation describes the main features of the TEX Live CD-ROM, a TE X/LATEX distribution for Unix, Windows32, Amiga and NeXT systems, that includes TEX, LATEX2e, METAFONT, MetaPost, many other programs such as Makeindex, dvips, xdvi and BIBTEX; and a very complete set of macros, fonts and documentation conforming to the TEX Directory Standard which can be used with nearly every TEX setup. This TEX package uses theWeb2c implementation of the programs, which tries to make TEXing as easy as possible, and takes full advantage of the efficient and highly customizable Kpathsea library from Karl Berry. It can be run either directly from the CD-ROM, or installed on a hard disk.
