This paper deals with the relationship between spontaneous acts of reformulation performed by both speaker and addressee and shared structures and goals. The goal of an act of communication is to bring the addressee to share a contingent content of a message, but its success presupposes the previous sharing of a stock of long-lasting structures, both linguistic and conceptual. The idea defended in this paper is that acts of reformulation spring out of the perception of a lack of sharing, so that their contents and ruling criteria change according to whether the lack of sharing is about long-lasting structures or contingent aims. In particular, we shall examine the case of word meaning and utterance meaning in the field of long-lasting structures, and the case of the intended message as a contingent aim of an occasional act of communication.
